I've got an old style wave/slalom board sitting in the shed - prob 1992 vintage.

I saw this ad on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Windsurfing-package-complete-2-boards-sails-mast-boom-and-harness-/150683028540?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item2315688c3c#ht_531wt_1185

And so I had a look because i like these packages where they offer multiple boards and sails. I looked at the picture of the boards and I noticed on the Bombora Proto that the owner/or someone else had put in another mast track.

The one thing with the newer boards these days is the fact that the mast track is so much closer to the back of the board than the 80's/90's boards.

It got me to thinking that maybe i should glass a mast track in to my old glass board using the measurements of the newer boards and give it a go. Do you think it would work? I've got no idea of the mechanics or flow of boards, I just ride them.

Also noticed that there is a bombora tri-fin on ebay. I grew up with one of those boards - was my first short board and came with a mylar sail and rope universal. They were good days. I am actually thinking of buying the tri-fin for old times sake.

Give it a go. Go to the Boardlady site for more info. One Seabreezer, Keef is into modifying boards including old ones.

That eBay ad is a bit of a laugh. Seems like beginner gear has changed a bit and windsurfing equipment is not such a bad long term investment after all.

Wow, Nick has no idea what a Bombora Proto 96L 250cm wave is worth..

It would work, but no better than it did. New sails have their centre of effort further forward, so to keep the centre of effort the same relative to stance, the mast track had to come backwards.. It's still a bloody old board tho, no matter what sail you have on it..

You should absolutely buy this Bombora tri-fin.

Nothing wrong with old boards, I have a custom 8'4" glass wave board for my high wind board. It had 2 rear strap positions which didn't suit me so i put the raer strap between both and is now comfortable. The mast track is longer and further forward aswell, it works ok when mast is set at very rear of the track. When time permits I will rout out the original and put in a newy in the position shown in one of the pics below.

I have also recently purchased a nused 5.8 aerotech wave sail in excellent condition (2006) compared to my other smaller and larger mid to late 90's sails this one handles like a dream. I have used it twice in 25 -30 kts bump n jump up to about 1.5m swell in the bay when other guys were on 4.6 and 5.0 with modern boards. I had no troble keeping up with them. It handles better in those conditions than my smaller older ones.

for the budget conscious old is ok if you can get a good board for the right price. I paid $50 for the one below .

I will upgrade when the funds become available. Untill then old is still good fun.

Hey Lungs, i wouldn't route any holes in that board, it's mint condition and has some cool graphic, i would clean the wax off and hang it on the wall.

thanks p.c, it has a couple of impact dents underneath but nothing major, apart from a double concave and great v section , weighs in at 10kg 1.5 more than a mistral shift 99ltr i have. It'l be awhile before any routing happens as my to do stretches from here to wa. The wax will have to stay for awhile as it prevents major injury to my anatomy when waterstarting, as nearly happened the first time i took it out without wax.

If your wall has the space.........everything is for sale at a price.
If i win the lotto again at some time, i would by up all the old windsurfing gear around and open up a museum.
