Yesterday I saw a canadian canoe that a mate had made from thin (1") strips of light weight timber with a coat of glass over top and bottom. The strips have a rounded tongue so they curve nicely top to bottom. I was surprised how light such a big canoe was - felt not much heavier than a wally. I was wondering if anyone has built a windsurfer (longboard) using this technique.

What about the *brd Serenity?

I've made several. If you make them right water getting in isn't too much of a problem.

Thanks Sailhack. The 2nd board has sugar for the deck grip. That is a mans board
The board in the second photo was made with a ply frame and ply bottom and deck with balsa & cedar rails. The other one also has a ply frame and then paulownia. Paulownia is the lightest wood to use that is water resistant, even so the weight works out at just over 1kg per 10 liters. Balsa can be used for the entire board that is comparable to a carbon board in weight and stiffness.

The next board isn't mine, it is of another forum and is a 9' balsa slalom board that weighs 5kg.

I got the wood from Port Philip Paulownia.I think that they would ship it for you. Don't know where in NSW you could get it. Western red cedar is also an option. At a guess the board nbr posted is probably WRC. I dont have plans as such but pm me with your email address and I'll send you the file. You will need to download AKU shaper and or board cad. As far as the cost, here is a rough guess.
Paulownia 120
Plywood 30
Resin 50
Glass 50
Sand paper roller etc 30
Foot straps 40
Foot pads (yoga mat) 15
Mast track 10
Glue 10

Top stuff Glitch. It was Paulownia my mate used for his canoe and worked a treat, great to see it can also work on windsurfers. Your boards look great, particularly the first one with Paulownia.

So does anyone have the designs for a Div II like a Lechner?

I have been toying with the idea for a long board along the lines of an exocet d2. if I ever get round to making one I'll send you the details. If you do a search on the lbwindsurfing site there are some ideas by yagon for a similar board that he has drawn up. It might be worth contacting him for the details as that could easily be adapted for a wood build.
There are also some SUPs that work well. The Wood Surfboard Supply Company have a SUP with a sailboard conversion kit. woodsurfboardsupply.com/sailboard.html . There is also this thread http://grainsurf.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5051 for a racing SUP that is still in the prototype stage for the Wood Surfboard Supply Company that could posibly be converted to an efficient light wind board.

Start off with AKUshaper. It is easier.

Sounds like a lot of work. The minimum thickness should be no less than about 4mm. I usually go about 5 - 6mm when stripping the timber .

Out of curiosity, Norcom how much did they want for that ?

The wood made DivII board built by brazilian guy was a Greco. I have pics if you want... Chris, what do you want to do of your lechner?
For those of you looking to make a div II in wood (good luck...) you just need to refer to the class rules, available at ISAF...They have specific dimensions.
