Been mtbing for a couple years.
First bike was a Trek Fuel 6. Now got a Specialized Stump Jumper 650b. Sick bike
Never MTB in Perth. I ride Margs, Middle Earth and Boranup. Occasionally ride Meelup, Whitcher, Pile Road and Pembi.
Most if not all my windsurfing/kitesurfing mates MTB.
We surf/sup then windsurf/kite. If the conditions aren't right then we ride.
The best days are surf in morning then go for ride. Wind comes in then sail

I did ride mountain bikes a lot but found it was too hard on my knees and couldn't windsurf very well after so i got this instead hehe

Hey Greenroom, Stump jumper was a close second to Scott (Shock lock out on bars was a no brainer for me the way I ride)
Have you tried cleats? if not go out and get your self a set and clipin shoes, with your feet locked onto the bike you will ride heaps better, and the crashes are also heaps better for ur mates watching.


I mostly ride Glenrock as its 900 metres from my front door, Scott doesnt look that clean now with a few thousand km on the clock.

I've rode the wall of a dam.

Have you dried some fiveten freeriders (with the flat soles)? The pedal stick you get off those with decent pedals is awesome.

Yep on my first bike I had ABD pedals with Five10 Impact Low's.
Now I ride Specialized Bennies with Five10 Impact VXi's

I lived in Rotorua NZ for 8 years during the 90's. Roto-vegas has epic MTB trails, due to the pumice soil type and pine trees. it's developed into a large MTB park now and real MTB culture in the town. I MTB and waterskied (lots of lakes, plus snow skiing was 1.5hrs away), however for windsurfing it was the 2nd most windless place in NZ.

I've got a giant anthem 0, and do some biking around home in Warrnambool and the Otways, however I do miss the great flowing rides the trails have in Vegas (and the lack of rocks).

My time in Rotorua did make me realise, that you are either a mountain person or a ocean person. I'm more connected to the ocean.

For those of you close to Sidney, I think you can get direct flights into Rotorua, great for a long weekend as the accommodation strip is only 5min bike from the trails.

Yep, another one for the pre season keep fit MTB, really enjoying it, some great spots here on the Sunshine Coast,
I need to get me one of those fancy soft tail bikes though, ...feeling it today, parklands is pretty rocky, steep in sections, then tight rainforest runs with nicely groomed go fast tight berms and some small jumps for those with private medical insurance!

I once got like three foot of air.

Grew up having to ride a bike to school everyday, couldn't wait to get a car, never looked back.
But I can appreciate the sport and the cool vids that can come out of it.

Where are you going to be riding and what sort of riding?
Bikes are like boards. I could take a freestyle board out in the waves but prob wont suit the conditions? You could take a wave board speed sailing but I'm guessing no speed records will be broken?
Hard tails are cheap (cheaper) and are good for flogging around the fire roads and trails. 29" are great for travel speed, ride uphill and quick descents. But when you get into tight winding trails and downhill single tracks, the 29er you may find to be too much bike. That's where the 26 or better still 27.5 (650b) comes into play.
If you got the coin get a dually first up. They ride WAY better.
I have both and use both equally as much.

Youse get a reaaaal good duelly for $2000 second hand. Try as many bikes as you can at shops or wherever.
I started on a hardtail before getting a duelly. Now I have 2 and wouldn't go back.

Yeh all the forums I have checked out seem to be split on hardtail v Dually.

I will check out both types and see which I like the best.
