Seeing as summers on its way, (and my tube of banana boat ran out), I thought I'd put it out there to see what sunscreen people use.

To be quite fair I wasn't a huge fan of the banana boat, bit too greasy, and plus it always smelt a bit like melted plastic after it'd been sitting in my car after a few sessions. So looking for something which isn't too greasy, and doesn't smell funny!! Oh and something that goes on more clear, I'm pretty dark so I always look a bit ludacris with sunscreen on LOL.

So what sunscreen do you use? and would you recommend it?

I use Hamilton Solasticks or one of the normal mainstream surf brand sunscreens you find at you local surf shop.

As we sail on white glarey salt lake all year round we use Woolworths 30+ in the 1l bucket. not too greasy and it is actually the best one we tried. doesnt go off in the sun. we go through 2 l per year for one family

My more sensible half read a Choice article and we tried it . Back then they were still all rated 15+.
Every now and then i'll by a small tube of something else cos Im on the road or forget to take some. Ive yet to try a better one. You certainly dont want to feel like a greasy chip on a 42+ day on our salt lake

My sunscreen is one of those light long-sleeved shirts, and very light gloves sometimes.

No questions asked about efficiency, and I find it's no hotter in there than without.

(Ironic that I sail covered in the summer in Sydney, and shorts-only in the winter...)

Zinc on my face and a 0.5mm long sleeve rashie to cover my arms

Banana Boat Sport Dri-Block (orange bottle) is the one for me and the boss and we are both pasty as.... We sail a shed load away from windsurfing also (the % is changing to windsurfing these days hehe) and have found it the best. The best tip we got was to actually put the stuff on in the morning before you head to the water, has a chance to soak it and does not end up on the boom grip when you put in on 30 seconds before hitting the water. Really does work a treat.

Sail all year round in just your boardies and maintain your tan

Actually just Auscreen 30+ (Woolies), works a treat & I never (rarely) burn

Loreal do a suncreen gel thing which is clear and dries on, doesn't leave your hands all greasy to slip off the bar/boom. works a treat for me.

Interesting note; was listeneing to Dr Karl on JJJ aparently SPF works like this...

If your skin burns in say 10mins under a particular strength of sunlight, SPF 15 sunscreen will alow you to last 150 mins in the same strenght sun (15 x 10mins), aplying more SPF 15 will not extend that time, you need to recover in the shade.

SPF 30 will take that to 300 mins total so I gues after the 150mins you could put some SPF 30 on and extend it by another 150 mins (or just wear the SPF 30 from the start)

anyway, our concerns are in oilyness, and waterproofness to which I say got the loreal stuff.

Hmmm, yesterday, too big a rush to get out and forgot...little pink around the gills today.

I normally go with the sunsense stuff, it's one of the few that doesn't turn my face red after using it.

I have an awful lot of forehead these days but it doesnt seem to affect the sunscreen.
there is no scientific evidence linking the increase in forehead area to the amount of sunscreen used , as far as I know

As for sunscreen our family uses the Banana Boat orange and black tube stuff. Good for all our different skin types. Wife olive skin and me and daughter fair but tan easily.
As JB says everyone is different. Just make sure you use something!!!!!!!

I use stuff made by Aloe Up. Its a water sports gel, and it DOESN'T come off. Seriously, after 4hrs on the water, i can still feel it, and after a shower at home it is still on. Never been burnt with it. Got it off the internet somewhere, but i think target or K-mart stock it.

The best sun protection is a hat and appropriate clothing. For you lucky bast..ds that can sail in boardies, wear long ones and a rashy. Personally I'm not that keen on rubbing chemicals into my skin pores. Luckily I wear a long wettie most of the year
