I apologise if this thread has been addressed before. I am a long time kitesurfer who has a JP Fusion SUP in the garage with a primitive mast insert in its deck. I have always wanted to try light wind windsurfing out from the marine (ie 5-15kts range), would anyone know what rigs/larger fin could work with such a board? Happy to be pointed to a Perth shop who could help.

Basically you want a small wavesailing rig like 4-5m sail and the standard fin will be fine
The mast base will screw into the insert in your JP.
Make sure you clean the insert really well, they can jam up badly and the JP insert is VERY weak if it seizes you will have hell trying to remove it. Mine was major surgery
As it does not have a centreboard it will drift downwind quite badly until you're proficient but its certainly do-able

If you are really just learning or plan to teach others, you can purchase a stick on daggerboard to assist in upwind sailing in sub 15 breeze.
You can also use a 9.5" tail fin to stay upwind.
Very fun in 1-3' waves, with at least 10 k ot breezes.
Does anyone know if it is possible to semi-plane on a WindSup? I have seen comments that def can't plane but when proficient I would like to at least try to semi-plane on my Red Paddle WindSup. (Assume I would take out the centre fin)
Sails better than other shorter SUP's I have tried. I have been able to get it upwind in 10Kt with supplied fin as long as the sail is above 4.5m, i.e. not great with kids rigs that are too short in the boom length to get the COE back far enough. Quick tacking will be a useful skill to get you onto waves faces. It is slow motion but fun in the waves due to the swing weight. Also, the base connection is not built for the rip-out loads you may get by hanging on when getting washed. Cleaning the captive nut is essential. Even then, some fine sand will sit in the bottom and cement in place. Use a couple of extra base plates to shim it up so base doesn't bottom out and...stay in there permanently. It WILL PLANE, but feels draggy in the arms and drops off easily in any lull. If it planes, it is a good indication (and to others watching) that it is time to get onto much smaller equipment.
Thanks for such a detailed reply. Sorry what is COE? Do you think an Atomiq Duo would be a good transition later? I can't lift anything too heavy on the racks. That's why I like my Red Paddle!
Did you plane the Red with single fin?
COE = centre of effort. He's referring to the centre of lift in the sail. To go upwind you have to move the centre of effort rearward by tilting the sail back. If the sail is very short in the boom you may not be able to get the centre of lift far enough back to get the nose pointing upwind.
