If it aint broke i should never fix. Because my fixes often make unbroke broke more.
Mast goes in past this tear no worries. But i'd like to skip the rigging step of walking around to thread it through.
Would hand stitching loosely be the go?
Could it get worse if my stitching pulls it apart more?
For a quick fix, a bit of iron on Dacron will sort this out, and if you get some red Dacron, even better.
You could stich a patch that starts on the outside then goes in so it's stitched on the inside for the top side. That way there would be no ridge that could get caught when pushing in the mast.

I don't know about iron on but you can get self adhesive Dacron from Whitworths
