For speed runs, my straps were setup so I could lean against the rail and curl up my toes around to "grab" enough strap and keep the board under me.
For waves, especially in more onshore conditions, I had a hell of a time to find an adequate setup that would let me:
- Exit while being catapulted
- Exit while riding clew first switch stance
- Exit when going across the board
- Be able to rotate inside the strap
- Avoid unwanted foot exit on jumps
I ended up having my straps with play on the side and while fully in up to my ankle, I can still lift my heel up about an inch or so.
This way I can lean my foot against the forward part of the strap and rotate it to grab the strap and flatten out to let it go.
It was very important for me when learning forwards too. I do untuck before jibing and go less deep in general than when wave riding.
How do you run yours for what type of sailing?
This is what I followed. He has a cheat sheet at the end.
It's different on my freeride, wave, and foil race board by quite a bit.
Certainly never set strap so loose your complete foot can slide through, this will surely break something if it happens in a big stack.
wave riding, I like my rear strap loose enough so I can get enough toe pressure on the inside rail to carve a bottom turn. Speed sailing I like them a bit tighter.
30mns+ ??? Care to summarize :) ?

Some straps have stretch coupled with slippery pads and crazy chop...
Mine can be considered loose but leaning against the front of the strap gives me a nice and tight connection with the board.

Manuel that sounds way too loose. When wet and with some force applied, your foot could go all the way thru. Imagine a foot all the way thru, you lying in the water, on your front with board attached halfway up your shin, in waves. Fkn terrifying and I reckon it leaves stuck in the harness lines for dead (pun intended) as far as scary scenarios go.....cos there is no way out of that one.
Bit of a WIDE but tight over the toes. Pinky toe just showing kinda crash test dummy here. When it's time to exit stage left, I want out. PRONTO!!

"Tight over the toes" so you can't get in far enough to catch going over the handlebars and "WIDE" to give rotation room in a twisting dismount.
I'm surprised this logic isn't universally accepted?
^ Wide also let's you rotate for spot on trim in sub par conditions. Booties on RB ok. But booties on shortboard to me is certain death no matter how loose.. Neoprene on neoprene grips like superglue.

Yes. Not a bit wide and up to the ankles. OMG

Watch the video... Guy is a top instructor and as he explains in the video there is more to foot strap settings than just how loose they are.
Go fast, tight straps to get you out past the rails.
Tricks and wave, narrow and tall to get your feet to the toeside. Narrow and tall with short boards is safe, like no release snowboard bindings.
Ankles are fine so long as heel can still be lifted up allowing to jump out of the front ok.
I saw a few freestylers get stuck in the back strap while under the water. It's not super dangerous but quite uncomfortable.
My front strap allows me to sit all the way over the nose of the board while still being in the strap.
Anyway, we all have our personal settings, curious to hear about yours.
