Hello everyone!
I had a sail NP 9.8 rs racing what I break one camber and three batten. Its old and i couldn't find spare parts to fix ti.
I bought a Severne FW 10.5 from 2017 what use the same mast length, 5.30m and i can use the same boom.
My doubts are: severne fw needs a lot of downhaul tension??
I set my extension to 26 (sails needs 557m) and i can't downhaul "block to block" First i tried with a two pully extension, then i bought a three pully extension and its the same think...
the previous owner used sevener mast and reptil mast (cc) but also a neil pryde as mine.
i measure the mast and it have 530m.
Ok... i know all will say that the problem is the mast curve... but should be?? I think my mast is a flex top.
See the pics and the video.
Thanks!!

What mast are you using, even if its a flex top if the bottom section is really stiff this can still effect how it bends to get any twist in the sail.

I know someone here that had one of those sails and broke the mast as the required downhaul is pretty big.

Today i rigged it one more time, this time with harness and i can go to full downhaul... is impossible.

this mast could be so stiff?? I'm using a 48cm extension with 26cm extended... could be to much extension inside the mast???

i saw a new severne mast 530m cost 1000euros, is impossible to buy. Can i you a constant curve on this sail??

thanks!

Someone knows if reptil masts are compatible with this kind of sails?

A 10.5m race sail is going to need a lot of downhaul, you really need a tool to be able to apply correct downhaul.
But if you are not using the normal mast the amount of downhaul required might be different, you really need to look at the sail shape to determine correct downhaul. Look for how loose the top of the sail leach is.
You might also need to adjust the batten tension with a different mast.

Hello. I can put less downhaul, but will affect the cambers rotation... im thinking about buying a reptile 100%

the original mast is almost 1000euros and the reptile new is 619euros. Thanks!

Hi, you have 2 problems. The first the one you mentioned, the mast bend curve. Most Severne sails are designed for hard top, that makes the correct mast bends in the mid/lower section of the sail. If you put a flex top it will generate a very deep profile in the mid/low sections making battens/cams rotation near imposible. After some time you will end up broken the batten tips. The second problem is the mast diameter. If you use a different mast you will experiment two kind of problems: if the mast have a smaller diameter the cams will pop out when you rotate the sail, if the mast have bigger diameter the cams will make more pressure over the mast producing a lot of wear in the mast (the rolls couldn't rotate) and they could pop up too. THAT'S WHY PEOPLE AVOID TO BUY SEVERNE SAILS, you could pay less for the sail but ended spending a lot more because mast incompatibility. I use a shorter NP mast with a top extension in my 2 Severnes, they rig more flat and feel softer being better for my weight (75kg)

By the way, always use Formuline ropes on big sails. They are a lot easy to downhaul.

Hello! Yes, i use formuline in all my extensions.. thanks!

About cambers, i can put spacers on the cambers.

i learned in the worts case that severne wants that people buy everything from them... till your underwear!!

No rules... maybe they don't understand that SDM means Standard Diameter Mast...
