No wind ment i found lots of broken stuff. Which is bad, but good, better than on the water.
I put some dacron heavy duty tape over where this panel has broken from seam on second panel up from the bottom of sail.
This tape can only be used on one side of the sail as it doesn't grip the slick white stuff on the other side. It grips the slick clear side ok i think.

I tried a few different tapes, none of which wanted any part of sticking to the white material.

Not sure when damage happened.
Will it self destruct if i use like this?
If self destruction is imminent, any recommendations for sail repair in Newcastle region?

Nothing sticks to Dacron. If you like the sail , it will need a repair. It may , or may not , last as is.

That's odd. I have used that stuff several times and haven't had it fail to stick. It's meant for repairing dacron sails, surely?

Easy repair. Tape it first. If take can't take it, stitch fabric (can use double sided tape) with a speedy stitcher. Look at both videos I made here: windsurfing.lepicture.com/tips-and-tricks/

Nothing beats stitching it up BUT
Bonding sticky back repair tape to Dacron is possible with the right prep
Wash and dry area thoroughly
Brush a thin coat of contact adhesive on to the Dacron and wait for it to be completely dry (wait 10-20mins on a warm day)
After this preparation adhesive tapes will stick like **** to a blanket

Thats not stitching breaking , that is the cloth ripping along the stitch holes, two completely different things. Take it to a sail maker and get it fixed, not a massive job and if you aren't bothered about looks etc which I wouldn't as its an old sail should be cheap too.

Thanks for all the advice.
Yep, i like the sail. It's the one I've got and glad i had it today. Was splendid.

Random first pick off the google book in haste to get it done led me to Rocky Point Eleebana to Rod at Ullman Sails.

A few days, and back in action with repair hardly noticeable.
He managed to do luff sleeve as well.

A pleasure to visit for the breathtaking view of Lake Macquarie up there.
I probably used as much in fuel to get there and back twice as the job cost. He said if he knew i was coming he might have done it in a day.
Awesome.

Manu, so much info you've got there on your site, nice!

Nice to see that sail live another day! Repair well done so it seems, so good to go for many, many hours on the water. Happy sailing!
