Will you be willing to use sails with printed on advertisement if cost of such sail will be halved ? Another half will pay sponsoring company ?

I expect the sponsoring company would require a certain amount of time on water ... and possibly at certain locations .... Hence would depend on the contract conditions.

If you are self employed why not get your business details printed out to get stuck on your sails? It would be another way to promote your business like getting advertising on your car. I used to be self employed and did quite well out of it. One way I got my business known in a very competitive market was getting sign writing on my car.

Plus you might be able to claim windsurfing expenses as a tax deduction as you are windsurfing to advertise your business.

not bad idea
even better will be getting paid for sailing
If they are able to hire helicopter to tow a sign why not a windsurfer speeding along the beach ? ie Surfers Paradise ?
To be fair the hourly rates should be quite high .. and I am not sure if windsurfing as a job will be still a fun ...

Exactly. A lot of the Int. 14's from perth are self employed and show their buisnes on there sails. Tax right offs afford them new sails in the new year
Of course, there are different rules and regulations from class to class and thru YA as to what type of advertising you can display.

Well competing in the GPS Challenge doesn't really involve too much bureacracy and rules. I'm thinking about starting a business up on the side for a few reasons. I'm pretty tired of my job however need the money. So having a side business will give me alternate income and if it builds up there may come a time where I make the decision on whether to earn about $250 or $300 a day working for the man or $500 gross, working for myself, plus being able to take time off when the wind is up.

Where's everyone's dignity and self respect? Really, who wants to be reminded of the modern world's crass commercialism while out sailing?

The manufacturers logo is the only advertising I'd tolerate on my sails.

100% tax deductible... but you need to be a signed up member of an association where you 'compete'
As explained by accountant, it's like a racing car... it has to be in an actual race not just doing bog laps around town.

Oh an just for the record, membership to the association is also 100% TAX deductible

Look down at your board while windsurfing and you will see crass advertising unless of course you make your own board. Most sails are plastered with brand names and logos.

I think its reasonable enough to promote your own business if you are self employed. Its not selling out, its selling yourself and having the guts to stand behind the product you sell. Plus it sounds like the tax man will help you out too.

If other companies wanted to advertise on your sails in return for cheaper gear then whats the problem with that? No one is forced to do it. Many windsurfers dreamed of having Peter Stuyvesant stickers on their sails, living the life of a pro windsurfer over in Hawaii and the Canary Islands.

It can be done. This is a sail we recently did for a customer with his buiness logo on the sail:

I'd be more than happy promote some company if I got the sail for half price. Problem is, with my ability, the sail spends an equal amount of time in the water Perhaps I'd only have to pay 3/4 the new cost...

PS- If I ran my own business, I'd be straight onto Hot Sails Maui and get my company name out there. Very clever / smart idea for any business.
