Hi Looking for recommendations on a SUP with a windsurf option. Dont know too much about SUPs but there is such a selection I feel overwhelmed for choice.

I want to take it into the small waves, light wind freestyle and general supping when the bay looks like glass. Its probably going to get more use as a SUP than a windsurfer, but want to keep the options as open as possible.

A couple of things that I wouldn't mind also would be an option for footstraps and mast track instead of screw hole. reasonably hard rails so that it can get planning and I would also like to keep the length to a max 9'9 so it can fit easily inside the car. These requirements are nice to have but not absolutely essential.

any STARBOARD in SIlver AST construction is wind/sup crossover.

10'5 is a good allrounder

If you're not SUPing now be aware most people start off with a very wide board, what might seem like a long wide windsurf board can actually be a small SUP only usable for a small light person.

if you are going to use it more as a sup than a windsurfer....

then get a sup for paddling...

the novelty of a sailing them wears off very quickly !!!!

Yeah I have the 10'5 Drive, absolutely love it, great as a sup on flatwater and small waves. Good fun with a rig attached.

I don't want to disagree, I normally leave that for other SB members, but I've got a Naish Nalu 11'6" - great fun for sailing on light days, it reminds me of driving my 1st car - Valiant Regal...big cruiser. A couple of non-sup w/surfers had a go one day when the wind dropped & enjoyed it.

Since then, I've picked up a SB Element 9'8" - with footstrap option...haven't had a sail on it yet, but the way it paddles, I reckon it would be a great 'little' wave rider.

PFFFt - in your opinion - SUP sailing in gusty 5-15 cross off is great fun when its a pain in the arse to surf it on ya sup.

I got a 9ft SUP for decent waves and a cross over old starby for SUP sailing and surf sails well straps on the wave side - just a bit scary coming down off the lip with so much board in front of you - sweeeet little cutties too.

Tabou's 10'2'' with centre fin option is well worth a look. Sails well upwind with sharper rails towards the tail, planes well and is really fun in the waves, both windsurfing and SUP surfing. The construction is very tough being a Tabou.

I agree anything from starboard with the AST construction, heaps of fun to SUP on and great to sail on to.

I've got a Fanatic Allwave 9'2 and its a great board for light wind windsurfing catching waves. I dont think you could be doing much freestyle on it though, doesnt exactly carve or pop! And when the bay looks like glass you would probably want to be paddling a longer board than mine.

Suits my needs as a small wave surf / windsurf board tho!

Yep Ive been very happy with my Tabou 10'2"
Mine dosnt have the centre fin.
Im just back from a week with it at Merimbula and had a ball with it.
Ive paddled it mostly in small surf and also used it with a 5.8 in small surf.
Really saved my holiday as the wind was very light all week.
Here's the tabou in action at short point Merimbula

I have an SB Element which is 9'8" x 30". Not great for planning but I'm not sure any of them are if they are going to be good for surfing. You need the rocker to handle waves which means a whole lot of board out in front you if your trying to plane on it. Really fun for light wind wave sailing but could definitely go smaller for surfing. If your after an all round SUP it fits the bill really nicely.

just saw a really cool clip on the ahd-boards website
http://www.ahd-boards.com/ahd-boards-tv

in France they seem to LUV the sea-lion both for SUP and windsurfing !!
they have gatherings where everyone is on a sealion !!!

the clip shows them SUPing, planing and wave sailing !!

pretty cool in my book

I also have Starboard Element 9'8. Bought it planning light wind wave sailing but have had SO much fun paddling that I've hardly put a rig on it. Bought to fit in car. Could hardly be more stoked.

I have a SB 12'6" SUPer for light windsurfing and course racing. I had it out for the first time yesterday in sub 5 knots and it was great with a wind SUP sail. When the wind got up to 10 knots it was planning with ease. A great light wind option that felt like a WOD with a faster hull.

Personally I like a flatter rocker on a SUP, they paddle faster and straighter and catch waves easier, you just have to move back on the board quickly when you first catch a wave.
A typical noserider longboard has a very flat rocker.
IMHO a lot of rocker is good for steep waves like shorebreak or "pipeline" type waves and also good for beginner prone surfboards to prevent pearling.
But a flat rocker just teaches you to get back on the tail quicker, my 2cents.

Hey Windrider, a neighbour lends me his 12-6 for when the wind is light.

I find it too big, but still OK fun in 10-15 knot range.
Try it with a OD sail (old or new), actually sails quite well.
Won't point up though

I use a carbon art sup designed to be sailed as sell. Comes with straps and power box and rides like my small wave board, only slower to turn. Planes very early and is strong cause it has plenty of carbon in it.

I am installing a mast track on my SUP, where should it go? dead in the middle or a bit forward?
If you have a SUP with a mast track where is it?
Holding a tape measure up to my computer screen it appears they are put both in the middle and a bit forward, seems kinda important.

Wow. Suggest you have a look at the plethora of such boards from the various makers.
Compare boards your length, then copy what they done.
If you dig into the fiberglass, presumably you'll get only one chance...

According to my tape measure held up against the computer screen they are either dead center or a bit forwards, not sure why?
