This weekend was the 2010 PA (People's Association) Windsurfing championships, here in Singapore. Saturday saw light sub-planing conditions, and I believe a lot of races were held. You can see some excellent photos on Lawrence Lim's Facebook page:

(you need to be logged into Facebook)

...but today saw freak conditions of 20-25 knots (possibly peaking around 30 knots) for virtually the whole day. The racers couldn't go out! Only a handful of us with experience in these kind of conditions (and small gear) were able to sail at all!

So, effectively, the racing was cancelled -- because of strong wind!

You should tell some of those poor sailors that they haven't got Buckey's chance with their old Dacron sails...

One of the pic has an uphaul upwind stance (hand on uphaul).
Great pic, this move was used long time ago in races, it had disappeared but now it's catching on again.

JP, about half a dozen sets of hi-wind gear appeared from their secret hiding places on Sunday...I was getting murdered on my own "small gear", an Ezzy 6.9 and Futura 122, but fortunately the extra weight I've developed by strictly adhering to a beer-and-burger diet finally paid off...

I'll ask the club where they got that wind meter from when I go down tomorrow...

Looking at that clip, was trying to read the gauge, and found myself nodding, "yes, there's definately enough wind and I should go out".....

Oops, forgot to ask...was down there before breakfast for a nice little storm...I'll try again next time!

I reckon they would be available from sailing (boat) suppliers, as people were obviously measuring the wind well before those digital things were invented...

I'm afraid I failed to properly convey the ludicrous irony of the situation...of COURSE 20 kts isn't "too windy" at all; how ridiculous that they called off a race when the conditions were like that. Especially as, in past years, the majority of racing events here have been virtually windless!

But, many of the competitors are university students who have only been sailing on rented beginner gear and are not seasoned windsurfers yet...and most of the slalom and formula competitors just didn't have the gear for these conditions. Getting 20+ kts is extremely rare here, and while we take it for granted in Australia, you do actually need some time to get used to these kind of conditions!

Maybe next year they'll all bring the small gear, and it will blow 8 knots...
