A little bit south of Wollongong and the steelworks at Cringilla. Its not exactly a holiday destination. There is a caravan park on the lake at Windang but its very weedy and stinky there.

There is good windsurfing to be had around the Illawarra.

gregwed if you haven't been down this way have a look on "google earth" Jervis bay, its 1hr south of lake illawarra, great flat water blasting on the basin and a combo of flat and jump and bump in a southerly at callala bay, the nth easters are a good 5knts stronger than botany and the southerlys arrive much earlyer

Yes its quite flat behind the weedline in a westerly once you get over to Primbee.

It is flat, and it gets really flat when it gets really shallow. You can see it in the foreground, where the chop disappears, it's about knee deep. And it gradually gets shallower until it's ankle depth. The good thing is the bottom is consistently the same depth, so no sudden sand banks.

I use a couple of 12.5cm fins, and sail accordingly. Have to wash the sand outta my wetsuit after a big crash.

Plenty of deeper water there also. Formula boards and 16 foot skiffs can find plenty of water to hold races in. In westerlies, in cold weather we just tend to sail in the knee deep stuff. Another 200 metres to the north is the channel, sizeable chop running down it in a westerly. You can use the channel markers for some challenging gybing practice. Did a few last week but after a full immersion, I'll give that a break for a few months.

the best thing about lake illawarra is the mud, knee deep in mud keeps your feet warm while your waiting for a gust

Know that feeling..especially when you know after most gybes you'll be sitting in the water..
