Anyone used on of these on your boom or mast? Any weight issues?

I am going to be snapping one up soon and wanted to see how people found them on their rig.

Camera suits my needs as would use it mostly out of the water than in.

The Lumix is supposed to be pretty hardy - however there is also a Pentax now that is supposed to be pretty hardy as well.... Heard good reviews on the Lumix in terms of its HD recording quality....

I have the Panasonic Lumix FT-1, heres a clip of me sailing at Kent Reserve in SA (Victor Harbour) - The panasonic footage is the footage taken from the mast tip, the HD setting on the camera is first class,



I have it mounted with a flymount, have only used it once, but its a sturdy bit of kit in my opinion,

I was nervous about a $400 camera sitting on the tip of my sail though

As far as weigh goes, sure its probably heavier than a Go Pro, but I like the flexibility of it, the Panasonic, being a really good land based camera as well,

It's nice to see some sailors who are more my level & fall off occasionally having fun..! Good to see some girls out for once too..

My dad has put his Panasonic Lumix FT2 on the top of his mast at it worked brilliant the HD really makes the whole video crystal clear and and the anti shock really is great though the chop would put the vid up but goes for 6min and its a very big file to load to You tube.Any way highly recommend these cameras.

What did he use to mount the camera on the top?

He made up a mount and cut a hole threw the luff sleeve to secure the mount,its a big race sail he never really takes out.i will put some pics up of the mount eventually.

You should also look at the Flymount as you don't need to cut your sail and it has been designed for this job. You can buy them online via Seabreeze

ummmm, thats what I did....

I bought a flymount after being a bit hesitant due to the price. They are well worth the money, and they give you a 'double' session as you can have a play with the film clips when you get home. Mine has now even got Mrs Surfbus involved more.
Here are a few clips. the first one I have set it on the boom, the mast, and the footstrap. There are a lot of different angles you can get on the boom.

With respect to the cameras, I have a pentax w80 and it is crap for pictures unless it is perfect light conditions, but it is great for films and records at 720px. I think the gopro HD are better as they have the fish eye lense which gets more in shot. The pentax w90 I believe has an optional extra fish eye lense.

The Panasonic FT1 and FT2 does not support continuous shooting like the Pentax. The Panasonic needs its shoot button held down for sequence shots and will shoot continuous in low resolution or three at a time in hi resolution. Shame really as the image quality of the Panasonic is awesome.

Shoppingsquare site has the Panasonic FT2 on sale today for $297.95. I assume new version will be out January next year.

I have a Lumix TS-2 (US version of FT2) I did shop tests on the Toughs, Pentax and Lumix cams. Tough were good, Pentax awful (but it does have interval shot option) and Lumix waaayyyy out in front.

I used it on for HD vid on my kite (ye gawds a kiter in our midst!) recently and the results were great.

Bonus is the Lumix is a VERY good point n shoot camer for everyday use and super easy to work with.

Buy one.

Am I right in thinking that there are 2 very similar looking Lumix cameras with the only basic difference in function being 10m vs 3m waterproof resistance?

My understanding is that the 10m is between $400-$500 and the 3m is between $200-$300. Is this correct?

If so, have people had experience with both?

Can you adjust the zoom while videoing??

You should be able to. I just made a little video in iMovie, importing video from my
GoPro to iMovie and then editing it. It was quite fun to do.
