Hi,
I'm hoping someone could explain the PWA heat/elimination format to me? Each elimination has 9 Heats with some (I don't think all?) sailors doing more than one heat. I would have guessed that some sailors would be "eliminated" in a heat (on the PWA page I would have guessed these are the sailors in red), but then I see their names again in subsequent eliminations. I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

8 in a heat and the top 4 go into the next heat in a knockout format.
If there are 32 competitors entered its a quarter final, semi final, final and a losers final for the 8 that didnt progress at the semis.
At this event there are 37 competitors entered, so there is an extra heat at the start where the top 4 go into a QF.
Those in red in the results are those who were over the start line too early and disqualified from that heat. Or those disqualified for any other reason.

Usually at PWA events, in the mens there are 64 competitors. The top sailors are seeded so the first round just contains the unseeded racers.

Thanks, and what is an Elimination? They do a series of Heats several times to get an overall winner?

Yes, an elimination is a round of heats leading up to a final. The winner scores 0.7, 2nd place 2, 3rd 3 etc. Once that is done, they start another one. The winner of the event is the one with the lowest accumulated score. After 4 eliminations, you can discard your worst result. After 7, you get to discard your worst 2 results.
For the year rankings, for winning an event you score 10000, 2nd 9900, 3rd 9800 etc. Your best 4 events in the year count.
At some events they only get 1 elimination done, at others up to 10 (I think its capped at that). If an event has 3 or more eliminations (not sure of that exact number), you score an extra 300 points, so the winner scores 10300.

Here is a screenshot from the elimination 5 men's slalom. There's no final standings, does this mean that the elimination didn't finish for whatever reason?

They didnt complete the filling in of that elimination's results.
Elimination 4.

Event rankings. They haven't got the men's slalom results correct either, the winner should have 10300 points, as in the women's event.

Seems like if someone is early at the start, they are out of that elimination?

You think they would get a second chance like in swimming

How long does it take to restart a heat? 2 minutes to sort out who is over early and communicate that to the sailors, probably longer as they have to sail back to the boat. Then the 4 minute countdown. If everyone gets a second chance more will try to gain an advantage and be over early. It would slow the process down too much. The rules are fair and the same for everyone.

A bit off topic but regarding PWA Slalom Tebrias Israel.

What's the story of Albeau and the public apology?

quote from pwa site:
"The biggest mover of the day is - Antoine Albeau (JP / NeilPryde) - who rises from 13th to 5th after the Frenchman's DND (Disqualified Non Deductible) from Elimination 2 was rescinded by the Management Board on the grounds of COVID-19 meaning there are far less events, and the Frenchman offering to make a pubic apology."
