I had a look at the boards forum the other day, no sledging from other water users, really informative stuff about gear and designs, what happened to our forum?

So i thought i'd start us on a good path and start with something we all love.
Our Boards.

I've had a stack of boards, loved most of them like they were my only child, hated sailing some so much i wanted to set them on fire.
My 1st shortboard was a custom Gordan and Black wave board when i was 15, 8'6 tri fin, loved this board, Now i look back at it, it was a terrible board, bad design, fin box would break at least once a year, but it had a really cool 4 colour fad spray job. I think i loved this board because it was my first real board, learned to gype on it and jump, kinda like your first bike you ever had.
If had about 15 or so boards since i started sailing 20+ years ago and i think my fav to this day would have to be my '04' JP freestyle wave 91litre, loved the orange and black paint work, but these things were great for what they offered, on the flat water the stepped bottom was awesome, just gripped the water but still turn like a demon, and brilliant to jump, even worked well in the surf, not as good as a full on wave board but i cant remember ever coming off the water not smiling.. it was starting to get heavier so it had to go.

so what's your best loved board and why did you like it so much?

2001 Sonic 255 (no, nothing to do with Starboard) waveboard, the canary yellow ones. Double sandwich, years of flat landings and still looked new, really abused it bad. No hell dents even though it had very thin pads.
Best waveboard I have ever ridden, turned like it was on rails and never felt insecure even on big waves bottom turning with chop on the face, it was a bottom turn blade.
Never should have sold it.

(If anyone has a yellow Sonic 259 I'll have it... bit fatter now)

Nothing wrong with a bit of sledging, gives the forum personality instead of a boring set of information.

My favourite board would be my current rrd wavecult, due to many hours of progressing into waveriding. Taking it out between 5 knots and 25 for a wave when possible. Unfortunatly it's falling to pieces, lots of nose dings, I think there might be a hole in the tail, there movement in the fin box, might be time for a new board.

A board I would love to burn is the starboard carves, spent a summer with the 99L board as the smallest board around and we just didn't get along.

I have had two best boards. One was a Bombora prototype. I bought it from a windsurfing shop at the Entrance, NSW, around 1991. It was fairly short and wide with a single fin and a stepped tail. I learned to carve gybe on this board. The mast base fin track was probably very far forward by todays standard. However it was still great. No paint job, just glass over the core.

The second great board I have had is the Tabou Rocket 140 I own. Its a brilliant board for the winds we get in Sydney. Plans very early, nice to gybe and super easy to sail. The only downer it has is it has a definate top end. This problem has been solved by buy its smaller brother, the Rocket 105.

Had a "Magic Touch" custom from cornwal in Uk shaped by a top wavesailor Nils Larsen.
Designed my own shark motif on the bottom. Had it stolen from the back of my combi but got it back (had to buy it back) Took it with me to the Middle East where I had many a good hour on it. Great board for popping big carve into the wind floaty chop hops.

On the Boards forum I've seen whole threads on attacking people. Just that the moderators get onto it pretty quick.

My first board brand new custom board was a Wind 'n Waves shaped by John Broadhurst at Currumbin on the Gold Coast, I was about 14 years old. Used to ride my pushy up to the factory and just hang out for hours. Had a few boards from them until they shut up shop.

Then had a few WindFX boards, a F2 and a Mistral and finally some RRD's. I don't think I like any one more than another, they all performed really well at the time.

But will always have a soft spot for that first Wind 'n Waves. Ohhh the fluro colours, and the fade from nose to tail on the underside...ohhh I think I just got wood.

MAGIC TOUCH!!!!

Man thats crazy - my parents picked one up years ago with a heap of gear from the trading post.

It never got used until i think it may have been 2005 - Cyclone Benny off Fraser Island and SE qld was absolutely hammering south easters - we sailed a place called beachmere and it was macking - windiest I have ever sailed - kept picking up in the afternoon until solid 6foot BAY SWELL and ended up using the magic touch with a 4m - incredibly overpowered and the old girl died that day after a big flat landed tabletop - RIP magic touch!

Also a note from that day - we got home and checked the BOM beacons for spitfir channel which is really close to where we were sailing - it gusted to 56knots!!! Fark!

Oh yeah baby - bring back that day for sure!

Probably the late 80's I think . Not my first short board but my most memorable . A Bombora Proto with a wicked spray job that sort of looked like a stained glass window . Short for then , 8ft . Single into double concave V . Thruster with 2 centre fin boxes , so was assymetrical . Man it was a good board . I sold it to a friend who I have lost track with . I would love to get it back and see how it stands up against the modern designs as it was way ahead of it's time .

My best loved board would be my (or my dad's) old windsurfer OD, because that's what got me hooked. These days I love sailing my Evo 80L, such a smooth ride over chop, turns well, and just looves jumping off even the smallest chop.

i love the spray jobs on the old glass boards, every board was different, i've started a little collection, so far i have a Maddog and a Mike Davis, both with the full flouro multi coloured paint work, and a original twin fin surf board, it's like new with a hot pink and yellow spray on it.

Sounds like Bombora built some great protos. If I could, I would love to have the one I owned back.
