Found out me mum was keeping old wall calendars, you know, Woolies, flowery stuff, etc.
Going through old ones, found this gem from the days of yore in a calendar called "Sydney from Above".

Trivia for you'z: when, and occasion ?
Sure shows the popularity of the sports in those days...

Thank goodness it's less popular now!
How did you find a parking spot at the beach?
How did you find your board in that jumble?

And if you did find it, how did you get it to the water?

Very, very good sir.

Indeed I recognize the murky water and dirty sand from inner Manly... it's probably at the west end of the beach.

Caption says 1986 Manly to Spit, but I suspect late 1985 at best, perhaps earlier, since there are so few modern Mylar windsurfers in there... Also too many Windsurfers to others, might be Xmas 1984...

The old Ten Cate is probably the fugly in there. Also what seems to be an old Tarifa or something like that smack at the bottom of the picture...

The actual picture was bigger than my scanner bed, so there's even more boards on either sides that you can't see.

Raf was pretty close. Its actually the Stubbies Marathon 84' from West Esplanade at Manly to the Spit bridge and back. very light ESE and bloody hard work for your first comp. I parked about 1/2 a k away and lugged my old One Design down to the park. I came in so far back that I heard my name called out as a lucky dip prize winner when I hadnt reached the beach I also got yelled at a lot with this strange word "starboard" which I had no idea of. I think I made a few people fall in as I charged blindy through the pack towards Reef Beach.
I have the book "Above Sydney", great photos back then.
Pretty sure guys like Rohan Cudmore etc on Hifly and Mistral race boards did it easy and won.

Time of the year for a ESE ? Couldn't have been Xmas...

Thanks for the details. Wow, a book about above Sydney..

Hey Grant I was in it too, Thats my Crit D2 (no puns please on the name), had the same problem with the starboard. This was not about the starbord rule but I remember walking to the front of the board and punching some idiot, I remember a large lightning storm where the wind dropped to nothing for half an our 1/2 way thru the race, if I can recall it was manly to Balmoral back to Manly back to Balmoral and then back to Manly again. I've still got the Manly Daily photo of the whole beach, I'll look for it

Thats cool Al, I found my sail in the photo years ago but too old to remember now
Hey Piere, it was a coffee table edition taken by the 7 News red chopper back in the day. It has an amazing array of shots in it of the whole of Sydney. My oldies are in it on the rocks at Reef Beach. Also shows an amazing pic of Palmy (Pittwater side) when there were hundreds of windsurfers and no parking. Awesome to think how many people windsurfed back then.
BTW, from memory it was around end of summer as it was getting cooler but I could be wrong. Very long slog around the cliffs to Middle Harbour!!

Yeah, end of summer figures with ESE winds.

There was also a shop at the Spit at the time, a couple around B-Bay.
At least 2 schools there too at the time: one near McMorelands pub at Dolls Pt, and one at Kurnell.

Not better times, but simpler times...

(A shop at Parram ?? Why not Lithgow or Dubbo ?)

Bai Sail and Snow, owned by Pat Walsh and assisted by Col.

Col eventually bought Pat out, but the business went under when the sport slowed.

Rainman used to do the board repairs. He was good but now is retired.

I worked on weekends for them as a sailboard instructor (qualified by the AYF) for quite a few years. Always a lot of fun and sometimes very interesting teaching others to sail.

Ah the good old days.....

Used to buy their "hand made" booms as they were fairly cheap - but not strong compared to todays' gear.

Cheers

Yeah I remember on slow days we used to get up in the back shed and cut aluminum tubing to different lengths and then grip them, fit heads and ends with pop rivets and flog them off in the shop. Think I may even still have an example of the fine "craftsmanship" at home in the garage somewhere. Were OK for the price at the time.

Pat once gave 2 young ladies brand new demo boards for the weekend to see if they liked the sport. Think he was trying to impress them or something like that. Well on their way home while going over the Gladesville Bridge, both boards, masts, booms sails & roof racks blew off their car and everything was destroyed by following traffic. Thank Huey for insurance...

Ah memories........Cheers.

Funny how people differ.
Found out me mum wrote down 'events' on calendars like first walk, first tooth, first words, first day school.

As I grew up, I wrote down things like first time I did Sandra, first windsurfer, first race, first time took the plane, first threesome, first job, first spock.

Yep, guess different people have different focus...

That sail far right, middle of the picture with the boardnose in the water: is that sail transparent? is it already monofilm? or whatelse material? As far as I know monofilm came early 90s.
