they throw it in the back, roll up to the beach after a 5 minute drive, sail and go home.....just presuming :)

Love American pick up trucks and vans.

How much is petrol over there? I think on the mainland the price is around a dollar a liter. This is a national calamity and is bringing about the end of human(American) civilization.

not sure, but will check tomorrow, costs about $55 to fill up our Dodge Caravan V6 thrashed windsurfing truck

some of these trucks are pretty cool, some are just ridiculous

Go to Maui Coffee Roasters for a coffee (it's not bad) and then walk around the back of the building. They have a monster truck workshop there (they did when I was there) and usually have some wild examples of the big wheel 4 wheel drives.

Just about every second car is a ute over there and the winsurfers just hang their boards out the back of the tray. The locals proabably aren't concerned about security for their gear, it's a small island!

Back many years ago when I was on Maui Laird Hamilton had a big red F150 or something.

One day he pulled up at top car park at Hookipa and walk down the beach. When he walked back I was holding onto the tub trying to pull myself up to look starry-eyed at his boards in the back.

He smiled at me. I smiled back and said "I was just looking but I could have stolen those boards"

As friendly as anything said "no you couldn't" nodded a wry smile and drove off.

I think he was right. I could have tried, but then I would have been dead. I think the 6"4 and brick ****-house is all the security they need.


All the indigenous Hawaiians had the same big trucks but put tiny rims on them. The diffs only just cleared the ground. It looked ridiuculous - but they could do some massive burn-outs. They used to sit on the corner in Paia and shout "go home hoowley" as I walked past.

All I can say is... WHY???

Maybe the higher they are off the ground, the bigger the p_n_s of the owner?
(unless it's a chick driving then obviously doesn't apply)

god we get ripped off in this great country of ours.

Yup... Ford F150 sells for a cool $23,000 base ... You can't even get a ***ty matchbox size rice burner for that in this country.

At those prices I would only ever buy a new car...

BTW, the crazy prices don't just start with cars. Just look at groceries. Most of them are about half price compared to what they are here while the median income is 30% more. Obviously that's assuming you still have a job.

Sure the F150 is produced in Mexico as well as the USA because its cheaper to make them there. However when it comes to other goods that are sold far cheaper in the USA than Australia which are made in a third country such as German, Japan or China, it appears that Austrailans are ripped off.

I bought a camera this year for I think $310 (not totally sure) from the USA via eBay. The price included sending it to Australia. The same camera costs about $480 here. The camera was made in China.

So someone, somewhere along the line is making good money out of selling them in Australia.

Of course the ACCC won't do anything about this sort of issue.

Remember the F150 is locally produced in the US, and the price you have there is for the bog stock bottom of the range 4x2 v6 without tax or on road costs included, in a market where that one model probably sells more units that all utes in Australia combined.

Compare that to a local aussie built ute and we are not really that far off. You can get a SV6 ute at the moment including all tax and on roads for 33k. That is not exactly bottom of the range. Thats about as close as we can get to apples to apples comparison as it's locally built and any F150 in this country will need to be imported, have import duties applied etc and that all adds up.

In saying that, Oh I would love a F150 SVT Raptor.

You can get a 5 series BMW or Audi for $33K. New Lexus for 1/2 the price, all fully imported.

Mistral put loads of money into their image, they had the best line of wave and freestyle boards, the best team rider (see the Brawzinho in Pozo thread), and then decided to make a massive budget windsurf movie available for free showcasing how cool they were.. They went broke the next year.. (this is all second hand from the movies director and Brawzinho)

Can't find the movie on youtube, maybe i'll upload it to Vimeo tonight..
