Anyone been there in July-August? What thickness wetsuit would I need?

Yep Ive been there. Board shorts. Yes booties are a must.

Any tips on where to stay, where to eat?

The plan is to go in July and get over the beginner's hump at Club Mistral.

Wow, just, wow! What part of the year was that? Where did you stay? Did you rent from Club Mistral? How was the gear? How was the internet connection? (I'm asking since the sun sets there before 6 in July, and there is not much to do at night, I heard).

We stayed at the Indian Resort in July of two week. The wind didn't
stop blowing for the whole time we where there. The swell was always there, some days bigger an others. The best holiday I have ever had! Hired gear from Club Mistral which was in near new condition, so no problems there!! They even rig and pack up for you!!!
Night life in the resort was good with shows on every night. We where always stuffed from sailing all day, so didn't head out to the smaller towns. Good times

I went in Oct last year. Stayed at Mornea Hotel (next door to Indian - which was being refurbished at the time - and run by same people). Wife and I found it fine. As previously suggested, Club Mistral gear was good and service there great. Had to sit in the bar to get internet, and was a it slow at times, but no major problem. Wind blew 9 out of 10 days.
I went on a Simon Bornhoft clinic for 10 days. Couldn't recommend highly enough (www.windwise.net) - if you want any detail pm me.
With strong A$ it worked out an excellent value windsurfing holiday.

the outer reefs are heavy and consequential if something goes wrong
- I would say its possibly too much to handle for most wave sailors when its on.

I have heard that due to currents they lose a few kiters / windsurfers every year - i am not sure if this is true

there is a closer more onshore low risk set up that looks like small corros like fun.
There is flat choppy blasting inside the reef too.

The Local rum is amazing
Local food is great- go the food van on the point - cheap and awesome flavours and you cant beat the back drop.

It is quite a magical island!

Jem Hall does clinics there too, went on his clinic there two years ago, same experiences as others talk about above, awesome location to get away for a bit and just windsurf. Indian resort was 4* I think? not sure but excellent full board including drinks on the trip I went on, the food was amazing, including pancakes for afternoon tea. The rooms were on basic side age-wise, but clean and comfortable. Nice spa in the hotel too.

There was a kite comp on at the same time, but plenty of water for everyone. That chanel getting out through the reef was very hairy some days, I managed to get rinsed in there and pushed back in over the reef, not my best day. Mistral set up excellent.

Air Mauritius flight from Sydney was fine too, it was party central on the way over with several wedding groups on board who got stuck into the trolley service, coming back was a nightmare flying through night-time with screaming babies in every row it seemed, took the holiday shine off a bit, but I would definitely go back.
