was lucky enough to do it in 2005. I think 400 people on the start that year. Loads of wind. 7 races from memory. A couple were nuking. One of them got winds gusting to 55kts on the far marker boat and I got smashed on my 5.6m. A lot of guys on wave gear. Pretty sure AA and Dunky were on 5.1s.
The start is awesome. If you are up for it the pin is the best place to go. Just dont go in front of the boat

It also gets mighty crowded down there.
The water is flat if you pinch upwind to the beach and are up the front on the first leg. After that its nasty sharp pyramid chop with all the wake. And super gusty. Much nicer in lighter wind but 25kts+ it gets messy. Looks flat from a helicopter though

Found the fastest line for me was out to sea to avoid the carnage. Faster to sail straight to the markers and thats what the top guys seem to do. Crossing the sailors coming the other way is full on.
Each leg is ~12km. 2 laps on some of the races- making ~48km. Punishment.
