Noticed that a number of sail manufacturers (i.e. Point 7, Severne & KA for instance) are going for loads of black colour in some of their most popular sails. Can't see the appeal myself, though curious to hear what others have to say!

I've also seen a hot sails maui all black sail.

I suppose you could say thet black sails are cool or hot.... depends on your perspective.

I did notice that on a hot day the hot sails maui black sail almost dries instantly.

Red is the new black

My 2008 Gaastra was all black with a small red line and it was like sailing Kitt from Knightrider..

In theory Black is a good colour because it absorbs light, preventing UV penetration, which is what kills sails. Not heat.. This is the same with car tyres to prevent perishing, and dark skin to prevent cancer..

Furthering this theory, is my Thesis, as follows..

Blue sails would absorb every colour except blue, and the entire UV spectrum.. Whereas Red would absorb every other colour including the Ultra Violet light, preventing UV penetration, (like black?).

Does that make sense? I dunno..

Unfortunately, I think Point7's efforts with making completely black sails has ruined the completely black look for everyone..


And I suspect Reflexs Red thumbs are to support his claim that Red is the new Black.. Needed to be said, I certainly laughed..

Didn't Pryde already make obnoxious silver and gold reflective sails a few years back?

I still own a 2005(?) 4.0 S-1 with reflective panels.. Doesn't get out much since I got fat..

But the Blade had the full deal..



It would be better to do the underside of a board in mirror scheme.. I'll look into it..

but i gave up as i figured it'd probably add a bit of weight to the board if you wanted to get a really nice looking finish. also turns out i'm too lazy to build a board.

Simmer also did reflective a few years back, I disliked it on the beach as I kept getting a shot of sun in the eye when I picked it up, but on the water it was fine as it just gave everyone else the sh!ts I guess

Reflective board bottom would be easy Barn, you can get that chrome look spraypaint at hardware stores and it is not bad...... PC Simmo could advise if there is a 2pak?

I am going to predict that NP/JP will be the first to use chameleon paint on their sails and boards. What euro could resist a colour combo like that?

I hope none of the NP design geniuses read this threat otherwise their sails next season will very much look like the paint job on this ride.

Yer Mark you can get chrome car paint, hell expensive to buy the real deal, there is a bit of a process to get it full chrome, black base then chrome then the 2k clear, i want to paint a car in it but it's illegal in australia like everything else these days.

a board would look sick but prob be to much paint and get a bit heavy, chrome also heats up hell fast, prob would destroy your board in the sun like painting it black, a surfboard would be sick though as you don't really leave them in the sun.. Hmm Silver surfer, cool think i might have to look into that one.. already got a punisher one..

I like the silver panels, and Maui sails had some lovely holographic panels a few years back.

Would I buy a sail based on colour only? I have in the past. Now I'm more concerned with the functional aspects, but all things being equal...

Yea you could do a vinyl wrap across the bottom of the board but it would change the laminar flow on the board which may lead to a slower less stable hull, or just not buy a black board, or you could just take care of the black board. Both options would be effective.
