Needing to purchase a weed fin for 8.0-6.5 free race sails to be used on a RRD 111L Firestorm 238x68.

My options are Makani fins, MFC, Or Black Project.
Makani offers two different models and one of which is offered in carbon. MFC has been around for some time and has a rep. Black project is new and seems more high end, is also the most $'s

What do you all like of these options ?

Just to clarify Keef's point:

MFC = Maui fin company
MUF = Maui Ultra Fins (the delta's are the shallow water specialists)


...and Black Project have gone all Starboard on us with virtual sizing. The size 28 is equivalent to a 28cm pointer and is 23.5cm deep.

thanks for the ego boost milsy, ill have to agree with you about the delta's until you lift the rake, the smaller15cm to 18cm from 55 deg to 47deg, the larger you can only go 5deg to 50, with just the small change the fin will smoke to windward, and give you more pressure off the wind especially in chop

but after saying that who in there rite mind would change a perfectly engineered new fin with the latest high tech

I've got the Halalua 38cms & I like it but saying that I'm a freerider and not into speed.It gets me upwind well and I use it when my 44cms freeride fin is a bit much to settle the board down in non weedie conditions.

i'm a freerider too. Just wanting a fin with a fast bias. Also as i have a few brand options available thought i'd inquire into who are the best brands. @$200 might as well get the best, amazing how much $ fins are. The Halalua looks very different with that wide base.

If your looking for a weedy also give Vector Fins a choice, I have a 30 and a 40 which I use for 7.0 and 7.8 sails respectivly and on Futura 101 and 121 respectivly. Both are brilliant fins, so much fast than the Maui Ultra's they replaced.

Neither, If you ask 20 different people about their preference, you'll probably get 20 different answers, the common theme being that "you should buy this one because it's the one I use". Everyone's sailing style differs, so does their choice in fins. Start to see a pattern forming?

I think I can save you some money though. If you go to your local dealer and ask for a weed fin, put it around the front of your knee and try to bend it. If it bends, hand it back and try something else.
If you have a fin raked back at 45 degrees, the bend will NOT be along the flow line of the fin. Gybing will be difficult, but humorous for those watching, and recovering from the inevitable spin out will drop all of your speed.

Maui ultra fins have one of the thickest (highest) chord percentages that I've seen, choco are also fairly thick. JP make a good weedie also, but, like MFC, some of their larger models are also equipped with "can openers" at each end of the fin box.

I went for the Makani because all the forum reviews ( not here as then I hadn't heard of them ) raved about their upwind ability and that's a big factor in my choice.They are chunkier especially the freemove and I think that's why they go upwind better for their size.

Never had an issue with spinout going into gybes. Have spunout a little with backfoot pressure and need to be powered up to get upwind well with the 18cm weedie on the 78ltre waveboard but that's pretty small!
Also I'm not as good on the little board as I haven't used it as much and the runs at Canton were short to avoid going out into the chop so that may have affected how well I got upwind.

Note however i didn't ask what brand was the best. I gave three brand options and asked for comments on those brands. Everyone's comments however have offered me some help in my decision even those that commented on a brand i won't be buying.

My goal was to become aware if any of the three mentioned brands offered a better construction method or material etc. over the others as i'm not that up on fin design.

I have notice a lot of speed guy's have gone to Black Project so thought i might hear some advantage there.
