A surfer mate of mine has finally seen the light. He wants to start windsurfing. His mother in law use to windsurf and gave him the old gear to try. I went over to his house to show him how to rig it up. Its quite old but doable. The board was a slalom looking thing which he took down to the river yesturday. He loved it! Had a blast! And really wants to get into it. He said the board was too small for him and kept sinking when he stood on it. He asked me to find him a suitable set up.
So my question is what size board? He weighs 95kgs. And what size sail would he most likely use? Anyone got something for him?

Gday Greenroom, I asked the same question a few days ago,I have some experience on a long board and wanted to take up windsurfing again after a long absence ,on a shorter board.The consensus seems to be a board with a volume of 160 litres would be ideal(I am 100 kgs),and if the person is of above average ability and very keen as little as 130 litres.Hope that helps.

Got a NP 2001/2 6.7 Diablo (with swivel sheer tip) Swivel needs replacing but as he is keen, am prepared to let him have it. (need to see Reg to get one, unless somebody else has one they are willing to part with)
I can replace swivel for him if somebody has one in kit
Sail is in good nick. Wont go well in waves swivel fails at a blink

Mineral... would that be too big for him to start with? He used a 5.7m and said it was just right but wouldnt want any bigger.

If he's keen enough to persist with the learning stage, a 135 - 140l board would be perfect. I'm 105kg and most of my time on the water is with a 138l board, setting up anything between 5.8 and 9.5 m on it. Make sure it's a moddern 135ish l board with good width - 70+ cms and I'm sure he will push through the learning stage rapidly and realise this board will be a long term feature in his kit.
