I took my five year old for a double today (not a loop). Basically he hung onto me monkey style and away we went. Planing too.

Is at all this dangerous? I can't see why but maybe I"m missing something. Over safety-conscious parent. I didn't hook in of course.

If not it's pretty cool. We had a blast.
Highly recommended.

Have done the same - plenty of discussion before hand about what to do in the event of a stack (dont panic etc)

Life jacket on and go

I think with a life jacket, controlable conditions, a floaty board to uphaul on and some swimming abillity it shouldn't be too bad. Particulary if the water is not too deep.

Here is Aston at 4. He managed to go around 20m by himself to the sandbar. Have not gone for a double yet.

Good on you. Mine were with me starting age 8 months, in a Snuggly.
Then age 2, hanging on to the legs.

In this society kids are too sanitized - we need more of those actions outside the box.

i agree that kids are to sanitised i try to get mine out .i saw a documentry recently that stated childrens playing areas have shrunk by 90% since the 70,s mum wont let them out of there sight so they cant run around & play anymore . Its really sad because i dont think its anymore dangreous out there its the media hype that panics people when i was a kid i run around everywhere & i cant remeber 1 person mention sharks if i was in water but now if you tell somebody you windsurf its the first question they ask you & from what I,m lead to believe there are less sharks but there is certainly a lot more media hype & without gettn into specifics its the same with dangers to children & because of this they are missing out on there childhood .but u cant tell a mother that

I used to double with dad all the time when I was 4/5 years old. Either sitting between the legs holding on to the footstraps or in front of the mast... this was on 90-100L slalom boards going full power in 20 knots! Weren't too many white pointers at Caloundra in those days so it was pretty relaxed. I don't think I could swim back then though... haha. Definitely were no lifejackets.

I used to take my daughter for rides when she was 4,on a short board, planing, gybing and even jumping. She loved it when we went fast.

She sometimes goes with her brother ,exploring bays and reefs and finding somewhere new to swim.

Now she is 5,she rides on her own.

Elli is a strong swimmer, but a life jacket is must. The photo of her is in Bonaire, she doesn't wear a life jacket there as the water is no deeper than 2 feet. The biggest danger I feel when doubling a small child is the danger of dropping your rig on them, the leverage and force of the mast near the foot could crush and break bones,so I wouldn't advise novices to double young kids. But it is a fantastic way for them to experience the thrill and inspire them to become windsurfers.
