Unbelievably I managed to smash the mast into the nose of my board last weekend in less than 10 knots of wind and not even planing (courtesy of a high boom and not concentrating).

Got off the water pretty quick as I was worried about water getting in and have had the board sitting in the sun in the hope that any water that got in wants to 'get out'

Does this look like a home repair job or would it be best dealt with by a pro (somewhere in Melbourne)? Is there likely to be water still in the board? Is the risk delamination and would it be confined to the nose area?

I did a similar nose repair myself, but I had a bit of experience fibreglassing and replacing fin boxes 20 odd years ago.

If you want to have a go repairing it yourself cut back the damage back in a v shape, leave it for a while (overnight or longer) to let any water evaporate, then fill it. Depending how big the offending area is you can use knead it or get some divyncell & epoxy filler. Then seal and reinforce it with 3 layers of 4oz cloth and epoxy resin, sand back and paint. Matching the colours and getting a decent paint job was the hardest part.

Ok you dont say what size board it is but it 10 knots I'll guess it a big one - that means it didnt spens much time at all under water so given the limted size of the damage I'd say you would have probably got very little water into the foam - hey but I'm guesing a bit because I dot know your situation.

Perhaps one way of approaching the water in the board problen would be to stand the board on its nose (gravity and water dont get on too well!!) with some small amount of absorbant paper towel underneith to see if any water is coming out - this is the best you can do short of putting the board on a board 'spinner'.

At another level - if it is your most favourite board (?) then you might want to spend the $180 ++ to get it professionally fixed - but if its board that you have thrashed and dont care about a home fix look - do it yourself - its an easy fix!!

Board is 106 litre. I was out in 14-16 knots and wind was dying so just dogging back in. Was in the harness and just got pulled up on tip toes and next thing over the nose. I'm thinking I'll get someone to repair it as I just don't have the equipment or space to do it myself. It's an old favourite, so hopefully they'll get a sense of whether there's any water in there when they repair it. I think I read about using vacuum pumps on boards to get water out too.

Yep that is a Garden variety break . deffinalty not a bruise did the same myself .Follow Stanlys adise and check out a couple of web sites and go to wentworths and get yourself some glass and epoxy.
