Wow. That's a terrific vid. All very grainy and low quality but an outstanding feel just the same.

The sailor is Ian Boyd, one of the best/innovative sailors' around in the late 80s/90s who never became as famous as some of his contempories!

Surface Tension is still a great windsurfing video to watch.

Cheers!

Hi Folks,

I really like watching some of these older wave sailing vids because they prove that its much more about the quality of the rider than about the age of the gear. Sometimes when we get het up about the relative merits of quads vs twins, this brand v that brand blah blah blah we lose sight of that. This sailor attacked the wave really nicely and went super vertical and tight, something which has only recently become possible with the latest gear, according to some propaganda...

Having said all that, I do prefer sailing my Twinzer Mistral over the older, longer single fin it replaced, but perhaps a large proportion of the differences are only perceptible in the eye of the beholder (ie the sailor)...

I remember a video where Ian boyd is singing a rap song while showing some footage of him windsurfing, and it had him teaching jumping, forwards and backs, think it was called Airborne...

Agree though, a very good sailor of his time who never really became famous, but faded from the radar.

was going to say that's Ian Boyd. I once sailed with him in Santa Barbara where he went to uni. He really tore that beach break apart... great sailor.

That body drag is really taking the piss out of my wave sailing ability.

it's a great vid , but i'd honestly doubt that the original footage was quite that fast

I am guessing the footage was shot at Punta San Carlos in Baja... which is a pretty fast break. Also, don't forget it's a closeup shot with a long lens which always compresses a scene makes things faster than they really are.
