I think Black Friday got the better of me, took a 5,5 2023 Turbo cheap for the rare occasion it blows at my holiday home flatwater spot as a change down from a 6,5 Gator and to use on 105L Dyno in single fin lagoon mode.

In 3 fin seaside mode I have a 5,5 Blade.
Kinda feeling the Turbo was a rush of blood to the head and perhaps should trade it on before I lug it miles, open it and it ends up unused in my far away garage for years.

Any help much appreciated with these 3 Questions that are keeping me undecided before I book that sail as flight luggage :

- For straight lines, will the 5,5m 2 cam pair with the Dyno reasonably ? Am not looking to break speed records, just a decent blast and gybe.

- Is there going to be a useful difference in that mode compared to using the Blade ?

- If Dyno not appropriate I also have a 78 cm wide 125L Exocet S Cross (freerace board) for larger sails. Says it can be used down to a 5,0. Seems odd. Is a 5,5 sail on that going to be enjoyable and better than Dyno with a small sail ? The water is pretty flat.

I am 78 kg. Intermediate.

Many thanks for any insights.

Maybe the following upsize analogy will help. I am just under 90k (finally after much bike riding), have a 115 dyno, a 6.4 Ezzy zeta (5-batten wave sail) and an older 6.5 ezzy infinity (2 cam free ride precursor to lion). I never use the infinity. True, i don't sail much in flat water, bit if i did, i would use the twin cam sail and a different board.

Also I'm lazy and can't be f'd changing foot strap modes on the dyno

The Turbo will be better than the Blade for flat water blasting as thats what it is made for. It will go deeper downwind better, more wind range in gusty winds, more stable in gusts. Move the straps to their most rear and outboard positions, and the mast track a bit further forward than in 3 fin wave mode (thats what Ive found going from 3 to 1 fin on freewave type boards).

The Dyno will be better than the Exocet 125l as that will feel massive with a 5.5m on it in strong winds. Exocet seem to be over generous with their sail ranges at the small end, but more reasonable at the large end.
I've found for most freerace/freeride boards to take their largest sail size, take 0.5m off that for the largest size and 1.5m off that for the smallest. So a recommended sail size of 5.0m to 8.5m is realistically 6.5m - 8.0m.

And he's a strong-wind monster!

Hi,
i weigh 82kg, am actually a slalom-aficionado, but have a Dyno 95 V3 and use the Dyno mostly in single fin mode, blasting over the swell when the wind is up. My standard sails for the Dyno are Gators 4.2/4.7/5.5/6.5, but I also have an NCX 5.0 and I actually love the NCX on the single-fin Dyno 95. It is a decent high-wind freeride setup.
I have only one Turbo, a 9.2 which I obviously never used with the Dyno, so no experience with Turbo on Dyno. But from a handling perspective, Turbos are really freeride-oriented sails for flat-water blasting. I would believe that it would go reasonably well with a Dyno in single-fin mode. I'd try it out, and maybe use a more speed-oriented fin (I use a select Fast Wave).

As for the Exocet question, I don't know the board but a 5.5 is pretty small on a 125L, 78cm wide board. You might have troubles keeping the nose down: A small sail creates little pressure on the mastfoot, which makes the nose rise at high speeds - that's very unstable.
With 78 kg, you'd be using the Turbo 5.5 with around 20kn of wind. Weighing few kg more than you, I'd use my 105 Fox or 97L iSonic or 95L Dyno in these conditions (depending on the water), but never a 125L board.
If you really want to do that, move the mastfoot position more forward to have the downward force of the sail more forward and keep the nose from rising. And use a smaller fin, maybe around 39cm.

Thank you all.

Update : A local handed me a JP Magic Ride Pro 97L v2 for learning smaller board slalom on flat water rather than beating up the Dyno.

So a cheap Turbo 5,5 ends up being paired with a cheap forgiving board, for the sea the Dyno paired with Gator and Blade and its clear in my head and dont need to play with moving straps and fins.

Madame is happy too she got some new shoes and now understands.

Ahh that's sweet. I rented a magic ride in france this summer and I really liked that board. Compared to the dyno it was a lot easier to get going and to plane.

The dyno I really have to point it more downwind to get it moving compared to the other boards. It is good once lit up but it took getting used to. I did put some oversize non wave fins on it and it got rid of that but it killed all the nicer turning characteristics.

That's nice. But a Magic Ride 97 with a Turbo 5.5 isn't slalom. But for sure a nice freeride combo.
Put the footstraps to the outside position, long harness lines and think about a carbon slalom fin (Select S-Max...) to get the best slalom-like feeling and stance.
