ALERT : I see too many riders going all the way to the mast tip in the waves while there's good wind. Better use the heli-swim and once the mast more or less across the wind, lift and yank upwind to fly the sail. This lets us keep more control over the gear and avoid getting it ripped out of our hands or sink it when needed.

The first thing to do in the waves globally is to aim the board towards the beach with the mast tip towards the wave. If they are small then yes we can poke through keeping the sail as high as we can.

There is also the accelerated Aussie helli technique, it is little talked about though, you literally fly out of the water doing it. Its the only secret you need to know, the rest will come to you far quicker.

Here is a random hint...

Thanks all! I would think technique over panic though! Better move slowly preserving energy and not giving our beautiful wild life crazy ideas. I believe a lot of species prefer to hunt at night too :)

I find a buoyancy vest and super light equipment makes water starting much easier

I also hum the Jaws theme to myself .
Im usually on big cammed sails . When they are properly under water and all wrong I have to start at the tip of the mast and use enough energy to power a small village .
If I got time I try to crash windward side . If not , I climb on and pull start , I know it's not pretty but it saves energy.

I know people say sailin back n forth is just like mowing the grass. PULL START?? What like a victa mower? Different strokes for different folks.

At one stage I never used uphauls until a long distance race in Queenstown where I dropped my sail and started almost last.
I gripper the mast to restart,
luckily for me I used the check out what's happening to the field in front and saw windshift and still finished 10th.
Ever since I always use an uphaul.
