I remember when this was discussed before, but I still don't think it's worth $1500, or anything near it.

I think surfing might treat boards very different to windsurfing. Sure, it was shaped by someone that knew what they were doing THEN, but it IS an old board, and designed on old principles.

How many people here buy windsurf boards for sentimental reasons rather than for the performance that they give? I'd rather spend $1500 on a decent second hand board and know that at least it will sail well (well, as good as I can sail it at least...)

I don't know much about surfing, but have board shapes changed much? Could you buy a surfboard of the same vintage and notice the difference compared to a modern board? Have they changed a lot over the years as much as windsurfing?

In that case, I'm putting my Laurie Hohensee custom on the Market for $1500 also.

good old laurie hohensee moved to yeppoon area a number of years ago.
he is a legendary surfboard shaper and well respected in surfing circles.
he did ask some advice a few years ago about making a promo board for the "local" and got some components from me as i remember and stickers.

that beauty should go "straight to the pool room"

it's a cool boys accessory for hangin somewhere!

surfing hall of fame stuff loooong after you are dead.

I think I'll watch this auction with interest.
Dust off your old glass boards you could be sitting on a fortune!

I've got a vintage Hi-Fly. I'm not sure but they may have contributed to early windsurfing as much as Michael Peterson, perhaps even more, who really knows.

Not sure on age but it has "Made in West Germany" so around 20+ years, good condition. Weighs about... I dunno, a lot, 330cm long. Made from, feels like lead.

I'll start the bidding at 1500 Deutchmarks, or its weight in "Furstenberg":

I tried to bid $1.00 Starting bid is $1500

Windsurfing boards will need to be 50 years old before they become sentimantal and I would think that something that Robbie or Bjorn road to victory might fetch a nice price. But very few good surfboard shapers became famous windsurf board shapers because the concepts of sailing are different as there is are different speeds and angle of attack involved.

I reckon to somebody in Merrimbula it's worth $500

I think you're being generous $500 can still buy you a good modern second hand board.

It is interesting to see though how far forward the mast tracks were back then.

I think we got an old wooden boom in the rafters at my grandpas. That would be as close as you could get to antique i reckon.

Formulanova, I am not saying that this board is worth anything, I'm not a collector. But to compare it to any second hand modern board for $500 is really missing the point. Just in the last few days the first Rolls Royce sold for 8.5mil...now I could by a real nice Zonda or Ferrari for that but it's not the point. This may be worth the $$$ to someone interested in history and collecting.

It's not really apples to apples to compare to a modern board.

Yeah, I'm not saying that it's not worth anything, but this particular board is a bit different to the 'first' Rolls Royce, or any Rolls Royce for that matter. It might be different if it was the first board or even a board that was a proven fantastic board, but it's not.

I was comparing this with a modern board as I don't think many windsurfers really care about the older boards just for their historical sake. It would be like buying a 1988 Pulsar just because you see one. It was good for it's time but not great, and more recent cars are much better. If someone wanted $15k for a 1988 pulsar, I wouldn't be buying it

Of course, it will be interesting to see if anyone bids on it at $1500. He may have attracted some bids if it was a low starting price, but then he would be unlikely to have ever got to $1500.

I've got two ex-Robby custom raceboards and the Lechner Lars Kleppich used to get the bronze in Barcelona.....when they get to be 50 years old maybe they'll form part of my inheritance!

The East German ones were common, it was just that they were made from cardboard and thus may have had a slight design flaw :)

seems seabreeze forumites themselves have set the price for this board
looks like paying high prices for rare sailboards now can be attributed to these two threads.

seems a new guy? comes in asking prices ...of coarse there's all the usual its only worth a coffee table..but someone starts suggesting there could be worth in the collecting side and bango its put up for collector surfboard prices...

unfortunately collecting is no longer for the genuine collector...in this era collecting is for the 50 something who couldnt have their GTHO or their Monaro or Their Michael Peterson in the past when they were struggling family men...but now they are rich capitalist swine with more money than they know what to do with they can just use that excess money they have from their extremely sucessful advertising/coporate law/swanky business and plunge it into toys that can grace their driveways or in this case hang next to their autographed footy jersy from the last Sydney all boys representitive australian footy club run by some amazing cinema star.of coarse it will never see water again but perhaps a red wine may sit on its deck next to the little squares of fancy cheese.

Collectors were once the type to be buried alive by a pile of their own collection or newspapers [how do i know i was one of them now struggling to kick the habit] ...not the nuovo rich who would be buried with their money....and are we actually seeing with this auction the start of the end for normal windsurfers owning interesting relics..
will this put us into the cringable halls of the surfboard collector..generally a person who has never been on a surfboard or says its past my prime to surf anymore but i used to when i was a lad before i started my "Business of dreams" that allows me to pay good money for surfboards so that true collectors can no longer afford them.

is this the way it will be or am i really only talking "tongue in cheek" here because I havent been posting for a long time...mind you i have a couple of fibreglass sailboards that any of the nuovo rich reading might like to hang next to their autographed bradman ball protector or their pretentious limited print of some bathurst GTHO signed by the chief pit mechanic with an oily screwdriver which had just adjusted the carby that won bathurst..

Yes i am talking tongue in cheek but with venom for I am a recovering collector very happy to allow any of my collection to grace the nuovo riches boardroom ...for a price...so if you want a goggomobil to put that Michael Peterson on top off give me a call...seriously.

copies of this speach can be obtained in the foyer.

Sorry I don't get it -

I wouldn't be bothered crossing the road to pick it up if my neighbor was giving it away!!!!

I can Imagine a pub down south in Merimbula maybe hanging it on the wall in the bar but not at that cost.

More intersting windsurfing collecters item would be an original teak boom!

Good luck in selling it.
