The regatta is now called "The 2018 Downunder Pro Windfoil Championship" -


The notice of race has been updated to reflect this name change and also incorporates the following changes;

(1) There are now two divisions in the championship - Open & Free Foil. The latter is modelled on the "Free Formula" division that has been successful for a number of seasons in the formula class. The division is aimed at sailors new to racing, or don't necessarily have race-ready foiling equipment but want to get involved in the event. The Free Foil division will foil on the same "water" as the Open division but will race a shortened distance - either less number of laps or a shortened course. The start line will be common for all but the Free Foil division will start after Open fleet starts.

(2) To place in the 2018 Australian Windfoil Championship sailors need to have an official "AUS" sailing number, as issued by the AWA and foil in the Open division. All sailors in the Open division (including those from non- Australian nations) will be competing for the "2018 Downunder Pro Windfoil Championship".

It is worth repeating the equipment restrictions for the event;

Only one board can be used
Only one foiling mast can be used

Everything else is up to the sailor to choose. This means that there are no restrictions on the type or number of foils (as in main foil & stabiliser) that can be used, and no restrictions on the number or type of sails used.

Generally speaking we are aiming to race in winds less than 25 knots. The wind minimum will be judged by the RO, based on whether the majority of the fleet is flying for the majority of the time. This may be 10 knots. At best windspeed might be measured at the start boat, so is not really a good measure of the wind across the course. More details will be presented in the Sailing Instructions.

Note that running the FIRST windfoil regatta in Australia is a bit of a voyage of discovery, so we may not have things right. We will learn and make the next one even better!

Really late notice, but I'm heading to Sydney early on Friday for the Windfoil nationals on Botany Bay. I have 2 spare seats & plenty of space for gear in my van. Heading back Sunday night to Holbrook & home by Monday lunch.

YES. You must be a member of the Australian Windsurfing Association.

In some States you join your "State Association" directly eg SA, but most States you join an affiliated club e.g. Storm-riders in NSW.

You will be allocated an "AUS" sail number and receive 3rd party public Liability insurance, which is compulsory for competing in Windsurfing events in Australia.

Super easy to do, but not a good idea to leave to the last minute...Cheers

I myself didnt enter cause of the forecast for my safety and the competitors safety. So disappointed with myself after buying a racing foil and trying it for a bit. Main problem was I had a massive stack about a week and a half out, got whiplash from it! That really block my confidence and progress

I manage to get some footage on Sunday, not great footage. Saturday was too far away from shore to see what was happening. So this ia all I got. Some more on FB by the official photographers.
