My front wing kissed a big rock.
this resulted in a deep long scratch up to 3mm deep.
what is the easiest way to make a decent repair?
is epoxy the way to go?
or are there other options?

Try blade putty, definitely the easiest

I've used this. It sands well, is easy to use and available from Bunnings. It's easy to fix scratches and I've used it to rebuilt a split smashed tip. That repair was still going fine 300 hours later when I pulled it apart and did a full repair on it (carbon wrap, peel ply, vacuum)

Others swear by JB Weld. I've never used that.

3mm is very deep I'd be going strong like resin with milled fibre or JB Weld

God no! Don't use Jb weld! I do a lot of foil repairs. You want to use epoxy with a little bit of filler to thicken it up. Pro tip is to buy some graphite powder (dry lubricant from repco or similar) and add a pinch of that in. It basically colour matches.
if you really can't be assed, then at least get one of those ready syringes of araldite epoxy. Might need to do a couple of layers if you can't get it thick enough. Easy to use and at least it is the same material as the rest of the foil. Jb weld would look so ugly and l imagine be a bit rough.

What's wrong with using JB weld? It is a two part epoxy from a reputable company?

Yes JB weld is tough but it is somewhat hard to work with messy and if you apply to much you'll have some sanding to do but if you want a quick fix go for it. If you want it to look clean go for the method shaneNZ recommended.

Araldite is yellow muck so would look awful on carbon, and not designed for continuous immersion. Would not recommend it for anything at all in our sports. I was trying to avoid recommending $50 for epoxy and more for a filler powder. JB put on with a blade will require very little sanding and be $20 with plenty left

further 3mm is very deep so I'm thinking something strong. An adhesive resin does not have the strength of something like JB. It's going to crack

I already bought me some jb weld like product.
(Bison kombi metaal)
I was thinking to add some charcoal (crushed to really fine powder) to match color.
i wil try (read mess up) on an old scratched up foilwing first.
Hopefully next weekend i'll find the time to do so.

Which JB weld are you talking about? I though it had steel in it, can't see that working in a marine environment.
