Lost my cousin to drugs when I was a kid and my best friend died a year ago from drugs too.

Very sad affair indeed, felt very sorry and still do for his family...tragic

Just by its nature the secondary cause of death being drugs will be focussed on more than the primary cause ie Heart Attack. I think this should be highlighted as 32 years old is way too young to die from something that is in many ways preventable when detected at an early age especially when you have a family predisposition for it.
Hopefully this will get some of us in a high risk category whose head maybe in the sand get checked out. I did when a friend died aged 40 of a heart attack, best thing I ever did, have a condition that is manageable that otherwise would have led me to an early grave.

What a great vid, he was such a charger and an amazing surfer.

I love Occy's quote;

" he surfed like a cat on acid"!

I find it sad that he died alone in a hotel room. I wonder if his mates knew of the demons that had dogged him for so long.?

Amazing tribute. You can really judge a man by what his mates have to say.

He sounded too good to be true.

RIP Andy.

What a great article, pretty damning of the pro tour and surf industry in general. I wonder if this is why you see quite a few dads travelling with the young and upcoming pros these days.

Ados - his 'Demons' have been pretty common knowledge for a number of years now.

Like Owen and Jordy. I think that with these types of drugs they are hard to detect.

I was in Cooli when the quik pro was on, man I could believe the amount of gear around at the time. I was told that its like this all the time!! Eye opener for sure!!

Crazy stuff. I would have never thought myself naive but i obviously am when it came to Pro Surfing. Honestly the guys look so healthy and fit it's just hard to imagine.

Luckily have never played with drugs and pray to the heavens my kids don't as well.

It really makes you realise that pro surfers are just easy fodder to the big companies and tours. In retrospect they are almost immortalized to a level to simply help sell product..

I just want to know how bad it really is the in the pro surfing world....then again, maybe I don't want to know. Ignorance is bliss perhaps.

Reading the article made me feel like AI was used up and spat out like a farking commodity. But hey..what do I know? I wasn't there and don't know the people involved.

What I do know, from losing very close mates to drugs, is that the problem never ever goes away. Rehab or not. It's not something to sweep under the rug. It needs to really be acknowledged the moment people know somethings up. Seams in this case they just wanted to pretend the problem didn't exist.

Oh and happy birthday AI for the other week.
Mick Fanning's 2nd place speech at J-Bay was pretty emotional.

It's not just surfing. It's everywhere. To think this is limited to surfing is extremely naive.

Irons made his choices. There's no-one to blame but himself. Same with fat people. You can't make them lose weight or stop SUPing, they have to make that choice for themselves. Or smokers. You can't make them give up, they have to decide that for themselves. Or anything remotely gratifying or addictive. You'd think in AI's case he'd be a little aware of his responsibilities as an impending father, but obviously that wasn't of high enough priority.

There's a lot to be said for personal responsibility, but it's rarely mentioned today. It's always someone else's fault! I'm not just referring to AI but society in general.

Legion you are mistaken...... SUPers arent actually fat its just their overdeveloped core muscles from sweeping
