so you reckon there's a bit of weed around your local, can you beat this? This is one of the best beaches in Mandurah and every year these things move in and do this to it, no explanation to the ratepayers as far as I know. It also seems to be a recent thing(5 yrs or so).

Looks like they are trying to 'trap' the weed in that one spot??

I'd be spewing if I had paid top dollar for a beach side residence and had to put up with the smell etc...

South Beach at Port Denison looked exactly like that at Easter after a 5.2m swell came through - just in time for the holiday makers

Perish the thought. You spend a million bucks on a seaside property and then you find out there's seaweed on the beach! Someone needs to be held accountable. This wasn't in the brochure.

hi bakesy, a bit confused by your post as to whether you mean it is just the sand excavation plant that has been there for the past 5 years (it has been more than 10 years in different forms), or the weed building up? also, had a look there last thursday and all the weed shown had been washed out on an ebb tide. it does look a bit average (and smells of course) when it gets trapped, but with a structure like the channel there, it is inevitable - hell, some of the weed piles i've seen on our coast since march make this seem like a japan sushi plate! also fyi, there is a sign in front of the sand bypassing compound as to why they are doing it. for those interested, it goes something like:

To ensure safe navigation of the channel and maintain the beaches
to the north, each year sand is pumped to the other side of the
Channel, continuing the natural flow of sand along the
coast.
Annual Sand Bypassing Process
1. Sand is excavated.
2. Sand is fed directly into a mobile screening and pumping plant
which mixes it with water to form a slurry.
3. The slurry is pumped across the channel and along the
coastline 250 metres north.
4. Sand is deposited onto the beach and naturally continues to
move northwards along the coast.
Thus ensuring a safe navigation channel. The current bypassing target is 85,000 cubic metres per year which is moved between February and July.

got a bit to do with the operations there, so if you have any queries on it, feel free to send me a pm.

Cheers

the photo was taken on saturday 21st April 2012. The machinery has been there since December. I'm not 100% on why this was needed to be done as the Cut has never been a hazardous navigation as far as I know (only lived in Mandurah for 12 years) In my memory this started happening around the time they finished the last bit of the canals on the southern side (six or seven years ago). Pete (WaterMan) could perhaps shed some light on this.

Shame they won't pump some sand into Medge.........was a woeful season 2011-2012, pretty much non-existent except for the largest offshore swell to hit Mandurah and then the tide was wrong.

yeah sorry hamsta, it just didn't seem to feed around there this year, even though the trap was full and excavating had to start. the sand that does get around to Medge, seems to end up at a couple of bars at either end of the entrance channel even though it is not real evident since most of the entrance is around 5m deep.

bakesy - the equipment rocked up in February this year, not December. they have been taking sand out of there since 1996, it was probably a condition of building the cut in the first place, since the training walls are blocking sediment from the northern beaches of mandurah. they also bypass 100,000m3 of sand past the mandurah ocean entrance annually too - from july to november.

thanks for the picture from saturday though - there was a similar amount of weed there the week before, then it flushed and i was there last thursday and it looked clean, but you could see the weed in the surf zone moving down the beach, they had obviously been ripped off the reefs by the swell.
also with a few nuggets between the close out sets that had me frothing to get out in the water in the afternoon... can't seem to get the image uploading to work today to show you what i mean, nevermind.

Weed flow is one thing I cant get my head around.

I was up at Lanno a couple of weeks ago looking at Eddy Island and the weed was out of control, piles everywhere! Had a look last Sunday and it had all gone!?!

Doggie sadly i think we are the same age.

He's one for ya. Can you remeber the comp at Trigg point that was a teams event? I can remember guys like the two TC's, Martin Potter, Even a young Occy. It was based around a country v's country event. They also had a big grand stand built just for the event? Must have been around 1985, 86 or 87?

Was thinking about that comp just the other day, even googled it to try to find more info on it. Waves were smoking, I remember Curren taking off after the siren and kneeloing his way in to avoid disqualification by standing up after his heat had finished, or something along those lines anyway.
Regardless he got shacked off his tits and threw in a couple of good hoiks on his knees on the way in.
