Hi all,
Happy easter!
My 8 1/2 year old daughter has caught the surfing bug big time. She's starting out on an 8 foot star soft board as I thought big, floaty, and stable was the best way of going. She can't decide whether she's a natural or goofy and each time she tries to get up she is doing it different. She practises on the beach before going out, and loves every minute being in the water but she is not picking it up super quick.
She had some lessons before christmas where she started off natural but the coach thought she would go better goofy. She copped some pretty crappy on shore days for her lessons and got a bit of a flogging but still came up with a big smile on the dial.
Are there any good youtube videos or other places that have good coaching videos for beginners and especially kids?
Thanks for any advice.

geez mate dont be so harsh on the little one. im nearly 40 and still a learner/kook i will say though, dont let anyone make here choose a stance. my friends son is 10 and sk8s unreal as a natural and goofy. i wish i could sk8 switch a hell of lot better than i can. with coaching books i got zip for ya,but i think she will learn heaps by being in the water heaps and having as much fun as she is.

Not trying to be harsh, just want her to feel like she is getting somewhere and not get too frustrated and lose interest.

Ask the person your teaching to face away from you and tell them to fall backwards. You need to ensure they have your trust in this exercise, so no wives. The trick is to tell them you will catch them pretty quickly, however..dont!

Let them fall far enough to a point where they move one of their legs. (don't let them fall on their backs) Do it three or four times and the leg they use the most is there stronger leg. Left leg moves backwards first.... good chance she's a goofy and vice versa.

I think it would be a good idea to get her to do both
To learn to surf both as a goofy and natural competently would be a great skill to possess
The next big thing would be the switch foot queen

My son at 5 did everything nature skate,scooter,draw/write right handed but surfed goofy, not for the life of me could I work out why.One day I mentioned this to a mate and he said watch this, stood behind my son told him he was going to give him a gentle push in the back,if his left leg went out first he is a natural or right goofy. We did this a few times and he was a natural so the test results said.Put the leggie on and after a hour in the water he had changed to natural.Living where there are some many right hand point breaks I think my now 19 year old son is happy about that.

If you want some tips,I'd watch and listen to a good learn to surf school and see if you can pick up anything.Back in my day it was pushing him into broken waves then in time unbroken and then he was going down the line.

Good luck its always fun watching the kids at my local getting up for their first time the smile kind of says it all

Thanks all for the advice and suggestions.
We got out both yesterday and today and had a great time together. She seems most comfortable trying natural but will see how it goes. I think we'll book her in for more lessons after winter when the weather will be a bit more reliable for her.

Get her to stand with her back to you and her feet together (Don't tell her what you're about to do). Give her a gentle push in the back and see which foot goes forward. That will be the foot that goes forward on the board. I've been using this trick for decades teaching people to surf and waterski and it's never failed.

That said, it doesn't hurt to let people practice goofy and natural as much as they want. There is no problem with being good at both. :)
