So I was just wondering with all the news hype these days of sharks everywhere, if a shark appeared in the line up what do you actually do? I mean to swim off fast or flap around is just asking for trouble isn't it? Also what if you are alone?

I saw one a month ago. It swam past underneath me, within 2m. About a 5-6'er. However, it was up north where they're everywhere and would've been a baby, just a little reefy. I told the other guy within earshot just to make conversation and that was it. I went in about 30min later 'cause I was stuffed.

If I saw Mr. White I'd try to stay calm because flapping about would be a bad move. I'd try to paddle to safety in the calmest yet steadiest way possible. But if he decided it was my time well, not much you can do. I guess I won't know what I'll do until the time comes. I reckon most of the time if you're a target you won't know about it until it happens anyway.

Surfing this year at Gearies on a rather good evening. I was the last in the line up and it was time to heaad in. Caught an average ride and still had to paddle over half way to get to shore so I thought I would go back to the break and get a bigger one so I would not have to paddle. Just as I got to the take off zone a 2 - 2.5 meter white did a casual swim under my board, did a 45 degree turn and a side glance at me, I did a jesus run. I paddled that fast in shore my hands and feet hardly touched the water. But as legion said if it wanted to taste me I would never have known it was there. It was happy just having a look. Thank F---

Wouldn't expect them to come in close around that area due to the shallow water. However, before 2000 I wouldn't have expected them in close at all. Nowadays seems they're mostly in close, in shallow.

Not sure how true this is, but I'd heard that very few people who get attacked see the shark beforehand. Which makes sense when you consider that they normally hunt by suprise - coming UP and out of the shadows. So my theory is that once you see the shark you're safe, and it's only when you can't see them that you're in any danger!

Just stirring! But I reckon they're around a lot more than we realise, and 99.9% of the time don't pose any danger. That said I'd still get out pretty quick if I saw one. I think the trick is to try not to look like anything edible (seals / turtles) but have no useful advice on how to achieve this.

You guys should get down to Aqwa at Hillarys and to a snorkel with the sharks!!!

Seriously , its a realy remarkable experience . I would advise all surfers to do it
It has definatly changed my perspective .

The bloke in Port Kennedy was in less than 3 Mtrs of water, the chick who was bitten during the dolphin tour was in about 2.5 to 3 Mtrs. The dude off Cott. 10 years ago was in about 1.5 Mtrs.
I think the common evironment is dark water to light water, i.e. reef on to a sand bank or weed on to sand or just straight reef or weed. They will use the reef to camouflage. The darker the water is better for the F-----s.
As for the Grey Nurse in AQUA, there is no known attack on a human from these sharks and have been known to tow divers around who are holding on the dorsal fin. Can't compare these sharks with the likes of a Bronze, White, Tiger, Bull.......

except the sharks at AQWA are grey nurses.
If the tank were full of great whites it might make a difference ?

Not sure if anyone has seen it, but discovery channel ran a shark week theme where a guy swam with all different kinds of sharks, he would rub their noses and the things would fall asleep - tigers and whites included. One shot shows a white coming up to him for what looks like a taste test and he pushes the thing off. There is one section where you see him coming over the side of the boat in a rather big hurry - so i dont think it was all good!!
In the last program though he grabs the dorsel fin of a decent sized white and is towed along a good distance under water.

So next time I see one Im planning on.... freaking out!!

anybody else with me that because of so much drama about sharks on the news these days, I feel like every shadow, cloud of sand in the water under my surfboard is a shark? I'm starting to think the news blows things out of proportion/ makes us worse off...

Not meant to be taken seriously but good for a laugh, having a ridgeback in the water could be better than a shark shield ha ha

It's odd, you know, how people react to sharks in the water.
I always wondered what I'd do if I saw a man eater in the water. Last year I did.
Surfing in Margaret River, I had a fairly sizable Great White do a semi-breech out of the water. It was smashing a ball of salmon that was moving up the coast.

Most of us surfers saw it and we paddled in. It was only metres away and was fining on the surface the whole time. A very impressive animal.

Funny enough, 10 minutes later, with the shark still present, some of us went back in to catch some waves. After all, it was clean offshore wind and pretty little barrels. It sounds like a very irresponsible thing to do and maybe it was. But the shark never looked like it was interested in us. She was happy gorging herself on fat salmon.

This little incidence taught me to stay calm, not freak out and just give the shark the respect and space it deserves. Things could have gone terribly wrong, but they didn't...and now I've got the awesome memories of being in the water with a White Pointer.
