I was out at one of your regular spots last week and a very large thing was splashing around on the surface 20m away for a good 2min. One other guy had just paddled over to where I was so I brought it up with him. The angle of the sun meant he couldn't see it properly but I could. I didn't see a dorsal fin and there were a couple of what looked like exhalations so I took it as a seal and it disappeared and didn't come back. Still nervous though.

I'd much prefer to be joking with someone because otherwise it's likely I'm by myself and that's when my mind really starts racing.

But yeah, if it's a couple of kooks trying to freak you out then that's pretty stupid.

I tried calling you on Sunday arvo. I keep forgetting. I'll try again when I remember.

There's a spot at Rottnest offshore here, Cathedral Rocks. I don't feel bad naming it because I've surfed it alone a few times, and dolphins and seals pass you by well inside very often. It's like a marine highway out there. Seals freak me out enough, but the colony of them way in past the inside section of the wave is big enough to surely attract the attention of more than just the tourist RIB. No doubt in my mind that you're eyeballed out there on numerous occasions.

How big you estimate Rick? Looks at least 5-6' but without a frame of reference it could be any size. Actually the dorsal fin looks like a dolphin, but the tail is all shark.

It is from a fixed camera at Rottnest Island - WA Fisheries Underwater Camera at Cathedral Rocks taken around 14/11/07.

Summer seems to be the time. Late October onwards. Funnily enough I feel safer in winter. There are a number of factors that could affect this. Annual humpback migration, snapper spawning in Cockburn Sound, etc. Salmon season (~ Easter) doesn't seem to attract the whites as much but I would think they'd be interested so it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few following the schools.

i have dived cathederals and surfed it for over 20 years and never seen a thing , i thought that the video footage waas well out towards west end from cathedrals closer to the righthander that breaks occasionally. I have dived and spearfished out the back there and never had a scare. I suppose that they are everywhere but, that area in particular would be a big attractant as the salmon schools are here as well. I always felt more uneasy at radars Should try down here it has great waves but lots of big freinds.

Anyone else here dived with sharks??? I scored a ticket for my birthday a few years ago to jump in the tank at hilliarys with them. A realy amazing experience...

I actually had a close encounter with a grey nurse in Bali about 20 years ago - they seem to be a lot less aggressive over there - anyone noticed that (must be the arak)

After having been bitten and copping 40 stiches the only sharks i dive with now are whale sharks, gummy sharks and grey nurses, as au_rick said there is a few caves where these nurses hang out, the people that know where these caves are like to keep it secret because there`s some morons out there that want their jaws, because their teeth look ferocious they were almost hunted to extinction and are now protected, but they are harmless puppys, and sound like pups too when you dive with them. On the other hand i know people who love to throw themselves in with the other ones and take photos.....

I'd say a good 2M +
It was as large as any of the dolphins it was shadowing and they come really close when we surf so I know how big they are

that one on the far left is going to have the next wave to himself.

yeah south coast cold but uncrowded!
