Topic has been covered before (few years back).
The ESDS is the smaller of the Shark Defence Systems, developed in Hawaii in I think 2012.
Roughly the size of a match box and is contained within a leg rope type strap.
Its competition the Shark Shield has a trailing electrode, is bigger but probably more powerful.
Doing research the ESDS Company has split and now two systems have developed. "No Shark" will soon be available in Australia.
I understand the ESDS has had warantee issues?
It seems the most proative solution to isolated surfing locations.
I laughed at the FAQ on the web site "Will it stop shark attack" I ****n hope so.
Interested to hear from owners if they have had problems with the units or / and especially if they've had shark encounters??
Cheers Mike D.

I have not used one, or for that matter even seen one in the flesh but i did research them a little. When i was in Hawaii i had my board fitted with a Surfsafe and lots of people asked me what it was and how it worked. I spoke with a few people who had tried the ESDS model and the feed back i got was limited to mostly negative issues. The worst was one guy i spoke to had bought them for both his boys. They complained of tingling in the leg after wearing it for any period of time, So they refused to wear them. Nearly everyone who had bought one, no longer wore it for some reason or not.

Were i surfed no one really seemed to be fazed by sharks though. A few of Main land yanks would easily get spooked but i think the Urchins were more of a threat TBH

Didn't Keernsy have one on

My Surfsafe would shock me a few times but i seem to have changed my style or something as i no longer get a shock. Often i will find myself feeling around looking for a ping, just to reassure myself

They make you feel a lot more secure in the water. Yesterday i went out with that board as it was darkish, overcast and i felt comfortable with that board. First wave though i changed back to a different board. When i was coming in a guy came out, he asked was i staying and i said no, so he got straight back out, he didn't want to be surfing their on his own. Im sure if he had a electronic device he would have stayed and enjoyed himself.

How far away are you Dave from allowing this unit to be used in a number of boards?

I've got three boards with surfsafes .. No problems no issues. I get a little shock occasionally , buts it no worse than a little tap on the funny bone, and its only quick :). Just a reminder its on, occasionally. Its light , charges easy,, and makes my surfing down south or on the rare occasion there's not many in at my local, makes me feel comfy about being out the back.
No brainer in my opinion...
Had a new board made by Dave (Fudd),, I had no hesitation in asking him to put one in it..

Support your local ..

I was actually really amazed at just how cleaver it is. When it charges it even turns itself on and off because the charge rate will heat up the unit. SO to stop that happening it charges with a system to stop that from happening. Dave really did his homework in designing the Surfsafe unit. As for cost well, the more people who support it the cheaper he can eventually get them made, better for everyone. BUT if your really worried just have one board that is a bit more of an allrounder and on the days when its dark, bait fish, out the back down south, use that one

I have three boards with surf safes in them, easily the best product, around a thousand bucks to not ** yourself every time you are a long way out is very worth it me thinks.

ESDS. I bought three. One for me and one each for the kids. Big bucks. I bought the diving one that wraps around the ankle. I replaced all of them At least twice. They just stop working. My daughters on fell of her ankle in shallow water and I lost it. ESDS reps said they would not replace it due to the fact we were not using it in the correct way. I'E surfing not diving. Fair enough. They offered a discount on the replacement but the mark two had come out and was very expensive. I washed my hands of the product. There are better options in my humble opinion. That said we never got eaten by sharks..

Saw on the Facebook that the SurfSafe unit will be presented by Dave on the ironically named TV show "Shark Tank" this Sunday at 8pm on Channel 10.

Best of luck!

Haha bastards , yea Im still lurking
I haven't worn mine in over a year now.
Fact is this. They do shock you randomly and it seems to be a lot worse for some reason when Im hung over - seriously!

Im sure you have seen the footage of the testing they did which shows the sharks swimming in then suddenly dashing away when being pulsed.
My logic is that they probably do repel sharks, however I suspect that it also draws them in for a look at what that sensation is. I also think that if a beast was attracted in there wouldn't be enough current in the device to make enough of a pulse to send it away.

Fact is this, when your numbers up, your number is up! Go hard or go home

Sounds like its a bit hairy over in WA , have to love our 'mostly shark free' waters in VIC. What I'd like to know is, has anyone been attacked with any of these devices on?

No and i guess thats the grey area. A few products on the market have had "limited" testing at best on sharks. Dave's though ( Surfsafe ) he has put a huge effort into testing the unit on Great Whites, Bull sharks and Tigers.. Both in WA and OS.

Shark Shield have had a attack whilst one was being used, but the corners report stated it was being used incorrectly. The electrode was fitted to the air hose on his hooker, when for the SS to work, the electrode has to be fully submersed.

Having said that, the chance of an attack is still so rare, so we may never know first hand

I agree, very well presented.

I get a feeling it is still only the beginning for this product, with a lot to come in the future!

If you are reading Dave, is there any progress or details on a removable/interchangeable device?
