Got the below board off a mate as a little strapped for cash so using what I can get my hands on. Fin needs a little work though and I'm after some suggestions for the most effective method.

Do I just fill the hole with resin (using West System Epoxy), stick in the fin plug and hope for the best or is there a more measured approach?

Your best method on this one is to fill the entire hole with a Q-Cell mix, sand it flat back to the bottom of the board. Then place 2 layers of cloth over the area first with a laminating resin and then fill the cloth with a filler coat.

Then get a FCS markout tool and installation kit and re-drill the plug hole.

Insert plug with FCS resin and milled fibre as per recommended procedure from FCS. Then sand flat again and you are good to go.

Sounds like a bit of work eh? Probably a better idea unless you know what I am talking about here to just take it a repairer. You'd probably pay $60 for the job.

Yeah that does sound like a bit of work. Might give it a go anyway, whats the worst that could happen.

Cheers for the help

Go and see Katana Surf in Osborne Park, I think he would be cheaper than $60 but give him shot and see how much. He is a Breeze member so maybe PM him.

what he said !!
and just from the photo(pencil lines between the plugs on the blank) that doesn't look like an epoxy surfboard so you would better served using polyester (as CMC said )resin than epoxy (unless that is an epoxy board)
if you are that strapped for cash go and offer to spend a couple of weekends cleaning and rough sanding dings for the guy that fixes it ..you will learn more about surfboards in a couple of sessions than any amount of bull s8t you read in forums

(whoops...........er ......um ..............except this one!!)

Mate this is a fairly easy fix, definately have a crack. I am by far no expert at board repairs but I do mine out of finacial necessity rather than choice. I like the advice above and it definately sounds like the proper way to go. But if it was lazy old me, I'd just bung a fcs plug into the back slot of a new fin, fill the hold half way up with lightly q-celled resin, make a masking tape wall around the hole (to prevent spillage when inserting the new plug) and I'd just drop the fin into the wet q-cell using the existing front fcs as a guide. Then if there was swell the next day I'd just ride the thing raw. But for a proper job then I'd put some sort of cloth over that gash at the very least with a quick hot coat of filler. Definately do it yourself, if you get the catalyst right you could be done in an arvo, riding it next morning.

Oh and don't use epoxy resin. Use standard polyurethane resin.
