No way! The boards were too challenging to ride.

The crowds were good though.

Agreed.

Imagine going to a world class break with no crowds, but having to restrict yourself because of your craft. I reckon this decade. Sure crowds are nuts at many world famous spots, but there are so many more options transport wise that you buy a ticket to so many places and luck yourself into an epic uncrowded wave. Given great equipment is so much more readily available, it's much easier to avoid taking an unsuitable board, thereby making any session that much more memorable.

I'm with you on this one captain. The feeling of pulling into a barrel would feel just as good on one of those old boards as it is today on a modern board.
I would be in heaven riding a wave like that with only a handful of surfers out there.Great vid

I agree......mid 90's I first hit the road overseas for a 5 year stint and got great waves with zero to just a handful at some amazing spots that these days have 50 out at. Equipment was not too dissimilar to today - although I would have loved to have had an FCS type fin system ! I remember in places like Northern Chile where I was hunting round for someone to surf with...hard to believe these days! I would love to turn back the clock on a few of those adventures.

Ctngoodvibes - I surfed that spot for a few days in June on a Tues and Wed early morning with just 10 people and it was unreal. Not absolutely perfect but a 8/10 day. I will recall those sessions for a long time.

Late 90s / early 2000s was great for me as well....but that's coz I was a young fella in my 20s with no responsibility. Me and my bro scored so many sessions with no one out via our boat. Great memories. Still reckon the 70s is the go though....some of the boards looked ok I reckon.... Like the one MP surfs at Kirra in MOTE.
I agree though Ted, uncrowded sessions are still out there of you want em badly enough. Problem is I am time poor these days.

I would be happy to ride those boards in the 70s.

Gerry Lopez seems to go pretty well....

I do feel sorry for the younger generation of surfers though, when I was a grom I could count all the guys over 40 still surfing on one hand, now it's not unusual to see a wave chokas with the over 50 crowd.

The late 70's and into the 80's. Single fins, twins, stingers and the invention of the mighty thruster.

No crowds and friendly locals.

Mid eighties to mid nineties, far less crew in the water and board tech wasn't far behind today, especially when you're talking spedmobiles like kneelos.

Yeah, I dig the empty waves, and Lopez firing it up, but the boards available to me and my friends were fair old pigs until the late 80's. Fins that were more like drag anchors. Noses that flipped like Beiber's hair. With wax that could polish your Jarrah floorboards. And don't get me started on our 'wetties'!

I'm digging the wider boards of today & there's still plenty of uncrowded waves. But yeah, the 90's were fun years. We thrashed this vid, "Pump"

But remember the wetties that didn't stretch and were murder on the shoulders and the leg ropes that did stretch and then zinged back and gave you a good smack. The 70's were fun but so to are the 2013's...the same but different

The best time for me was the 80's, just because I was young , fit and on the dole. Funny to read from the younger crew, you know in 20 years time from now your kid's are going to look at that magic board that you kept from 2013 and ask how you were able to ride a pig like that. Doesn't matter what year it was, at the time it was cutting edge. Oh, except for those retro boards you young blokes are riding these days, if those 70's boards go so badly , why pay $700 odd bucks for them.

The 70's was good surfed Margs with a small crowd and Lefties was a long walk Bears was the middle of nowhere and the Northwest was a secret ...sort off.
The 80's was epic at least 80 was, surfed the Bluff no crowds 81 all the Vico's turned up still there was Gnaraloo bash your way over the rocks to get around the end of the fence at the edge of the Gnaraloo boundary on the coast and the place was generally yours...empty. Left the area in 85 as it was starting to get over run.

90's not so much surf more family what can I say kids came 1st.

00's new boards new life in the water, its amazing the fickle waves around your local that fire that once or twice in a year or two that blow you away just like the old days.

10's enjoying surfing more than ever (warm water Indo particularly.)

Best decade ......the one you are fit and healthy enough to still paddle out and launch over the edge of that big set wave ....oh yeah.

the 60's were good - road trips to newly discovered breaks - as a 15yo going to the Goldie for a week or two with a bunch of other local surfers, in a car you wouldn't drive to the local shop in, and $10 to last the trip.
