I posted this in another previous thread (long board room) but thought id share it in here also. Lets hope it gets a tick of approval. I personally think the beach area at Middleton would be ideal for an artificial reef. There is already waves, it just needs a different shape than the usual straight lines
I think there will be some support against it from many locals also as they are still very unhappy with how Emu Point is being handled
It needs to go somewhere that its needed...perth has a greater need than Albany I reckon. Those albany punters always complain its ****e but i know better...it can smoke down there...and it would be relatively easy to dump some sandbags or boulders at trigg or scarbs in such a way that the natural sand flow will build up on em...hey presto instant bank!
the artificial reef off cables produces the best wave in the metro area
trouble is it does produce often
saw 4-5 sec barrel there when cycling past the other day, and it looked primo
i've had plenty of really good waves there over the years
but need 1.3m swell (cottesloe) for it to turn on
when the camera was working at the montessori school one could check it on the internet
worse now is that sweepers are hanging out there like flies on a dog turd :-O

I saw it this week and it looked okay also..
But it works to infrequent.
Middleton beach gets swell but when it does its just straight onshore and therefor often a big closeout. In the centre there is a large weed bank that holds well and only really when the beach gets washed out does it start to work well. I think it would be ideal

Yeah I remember that one, vanished about the same time as the one for Mets. I liked looking at those cams.
Perth could do with some artificial reefs, sink a couple of retired naval vessels at Vents & Conto's. Fill in the gaps North of Shag rock (triggs) & South end of Mettams. Oh & blow up some of the outer reefs blocking the swell. You'd havta get something out of that I reckon
The one on the goldy took some slick engineering and a few mil to produce absolutely squat... I think the waves are actually worse.. Rock groins are the go... If I were prime minister I'd build rock groins every 500 metres on every straight hander surf beach in aus.... Vote one me....

The main issue is that in a relatively short space of time the made effort is swallowed by the surrounding sediment and its shape and the depth that it was installed at are compromised. Narrowneck is a classic example of this. When used in the right situation and normally with a variety of other soft or hard engineering solutions they can be very effective at managing erosion and other issues. One day I am hoping we can get this right but for now our dreams are best focussed on Greg Webber in my humble opinion

Was this not built many years ago. The technology that is available now is much better then ever before, look at the Wave pool for instance. So design would be much different you would think. Having said that it won't work ever day thats a given, but when swell comes at the right direction it would be ideal. Middleton Beach i would have thought would be the ideal location for just that style of adventure.

Yeah the big girl was hanging round for a few weeks in and out of the bays
Reef would be awesome and alot of locals have been trying to push it for years, great to see the city finally take the first step - unfortunately majority of swells are W - SW down here, when you get a decent 5m coming through it will wrap around otherwise needs a good S or SE swell to get straight in, this usually happens in summer followed by strong onshores - every now and again everything can line up though
Perhaps Kamikazu would like to tell us about wave quality near groins in his neck of the woods...
Rarely much chop in my experience.
