I have been on a 9' 4" for a short time however did ride Mals and short boards years ago plus in the last 12 months on a SUP with now 6 months on an 8' 7" SUP and going OK.

My motivation is for the SUP as its more fun but I can feel the potential for the LB in other conditions. OH I also Kite surf and at reasonable level on a surf board in surf ( but now on the edge of turning 66, average fitness, no health issues and 75kg) .

I am considering a 9' 1" x 22.5" x 2.75" with slight 3 stage rocker to help paddling and catching waves with increase performance over the 9' 4".

I go in monthly comps so want to progress - bottom of the pack at the moment.

Budget wise I will pay what is necessary for the best progressive result so please provide comments/recommendations/advice.

Seeing you're in NSW - McTavish in Byron , and Goddard in Coffs Harbour , both between excellent to superb quality-wise.

With McTavish - go Performance Longboards , Fireball Evo or Evo II , UFO
Goddard - the Thunder or Nimbus maybe the Silk

At your weight and you want performance go 9.1 and not 9.4 McT Evo 2 or UFO would be my pick.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Just wondering how the EVO II paddles ie does it push water or is the rocker good for fast paddling and is it easy to catch waves with this board?

This question I have for any boards suggested.

If possible I would like it to be as fast as my 9' 4" (23" x 3") Ocean Blue LB

I think your listed dims are about spot on for your weight. Ring up the McTavish guys, and discuss with them. As what Mac said, it would be a tough selection between the EvoII and UFO.

Obviously these two boards are high performance boards. So you wouldn't be able to ride them in the Classic Log Contests, but either would be a great choice for the regular high performance comps.

You will be faced with a tough little choice on glassing options... Whether to go light weight, or mid weight so it lasts longer. Either way, you are best to leave it as matte, and not add the finishing gloss coat, which adds weight. But the guys at McT can talk you through all that too.

There is also the option to buff up the matte coat. I've had this done on 2 boards. You end up with a shiny satin finish, but not a super gloss finish.

This one is actually a buffed up matte coat, without the gloss coat. Or buffed up "pro-finish".

Lets move onto tint selections...

This looks cool. Sanded nicely too. I'll call this "Denim Finish"

Something like this would also work well on a performance longboard.

Sweet tints there Jas.

Warwickl, the EvoII is a no brainer for what you have described. Regarding Evo v's EvoII.

But as Jas pointed out, Josh does some awesome boards. I haven't riden his boards, but I know who he is, and he rips, and I assume he rides his own rides!

Well I had my mind made up and was about to buy a EVOII second hand but missed out.

Now it has been suggested that a board with a continuous rocker is good and an easy paddler and better on waves.

Can someone advise on 3 stage rocker compared with a continuous rocker, thanks

I would still like an EVOII but having a problem with paying $1500.

Just had a closer look at my EvoII. I was unsure if it had the 3 stage rocker. They say the EvoII does have the 3 stage, but in truth, it is very well blended, and is a continuous rocker, from a "certain point of view".

Essentially, the 3 stage rocker is;
- a little bit of extra tail lift, so you can jamb weight on the back and keep the nose up, or just jamb weight on the back for cutbacks.
- a little extra nose lift in the nose to prevent nose dives
- slightly longer flat mid section for gliding, and trimming speeds.

My SDR is a cracker - I don't get too caught up in rocker profiles, I do with thickness, widths, and lengths but I let the shaper deal with the rocker to suit where I surf and what I want to do with it and how bad I am.

This forum is somewhat partial to Godard, Del Rosso, and McTavish.
