I am a wimpy Sydney-sider heading to the big time by the look of it.

Any recommendations for places sheltered from this swell?

I am starting at Apollo Bay 14th and heading west towards Point Fairy.

Just pack bigger boards and leave your camera at home if you want to make it out alive...once your round Cape Otway its the wild wild west....Appollo Bay and Lorne are pretty sheltered....I would hang there until the it settles down a bit and then head round

Tux: One tip I saw was if you are in Portland don't mention that you are from Torquay. True?

This discussion is reminding me of my trips to Margaret River and to "somewhere" on the west coast of Tasmania.

Yeah pretty true....most of the really excellent waves that are around Portland are pretty well known on the internet now...there is one particular spot that goes coco banana's in big swell and SW wind...might be worth a look

I had that left on the inside of Port Campbell one day with just me out ! Mid Week - felt very sharky with deep dark water. Had a ball though. I tried to trade a board in at the shop down there and the bloke laughed at my 'toothpick' telling me it would not last 5 mins down that way so there was no way he was going to give me any money for it!! I relented and paid cash for a beautiful 6'4" that I took all over South America with me. It lasted the test of time

Its a beautiful part of the world - you will have a ball.

If you like cheese (my fiance is a cheese maker by trade) I would thoroughly recommend a stop here.

Not too far back from the 12 Apostles - really nice farmer who owns the place - has diversified his farming interests to also produce cheese. He was doing some reno's when we stopped by in Sept last yr. Should all be finished now.

I did explore (stayed three nights at Wombalano) but the only surfing I saw from Cape Otway to Point Fairly in the 3+ metre swell were two tow-in sessions. Saw lots of waves, typically I worked out that I could surf it; would have difficulty getting out to it but could not work out how to get back in.

Portland was friendlier than you lot made me expect - this pamphlet (partly wrong) was free from the Portland tourist info centre:


The trip was not wasted, my 9'5" takes a sailboard sail, so I sailed it at Warrnambool (Friday) and at Cape Bridgewater (Sunday).
