I am up for a new centre fin on my 9 ft 1 Mal . The old fin was a 7 inch cut away with 4.5 inch base , the side fins are both 3 inches high . I was thinking of trying a 9 inch D fin for the center fin . Was wondering if anyone had tried them and how did they go .

Will be surfing mainly on about 3 foot point breaks .

Did someone say fins!? Lacey can talk us through it.

Here's a selection from Patagonia Tokyo Japan.

It's actually a range of old and semi old fins, all threaded up tight with fishing line. They drilled some 1.5mm dia holes through the fins. Each fin would have about 3-4 micro holes through it. Maybe 2mm actually.

Thanks SP I really have no knowledge of the different fin shapes and how they affect performance . Might be safest to stick with a cut away and add a bit of size to it ?

Interesting artwork Simondo would be a few dollars worth of fins there .when I 1 st read your reply I was thinking here we go shark fin soup

Tas here is a photo of the one in the board I am using at the moment 9,6x23x3

it works well for what it was intended to do hold you up on the wave and slow turns, at the moment I hate it and cant wait to get a high performance mal again I had a 9 inch single fin in my MCT redline maybe try running your mal with something like that but it all depends on whatr you want to do on the wave if ya wanna go in a straight line and trim then D fin will do it
Cheers Boof

Thanks Boof . I still surf the Mal like I am riding a shortboard . Haven't ventured up the front for a nose ride as yet . Might check out the dolphin shapes or cut away fins . My side fins are fibreglassed in so no choice but to use as a thruster .

Oh if the side fins are fibreglassed in then def no D Fin mate, you need to talk your buddy into letting you take some of those old school logs out to experience

Still working on it Boofy I think they are the kids inheritance so don't like my chances .

One of them has a huge swept back fin will have to put up some pics . Must be 10 inches .

Shame the D fin would have looked pretty cool on the old board . They do look really cool on the old single fin boards with the hole drilled through for the leg rope attachment .they must give a he'll of a jar when the board hits the end of the leg rope .

Tassie 3 foot and you ride like a shortboarder 7 inch is the number mate,I've got a hatchet 10 inch for my log , I cant ride it,whack a 10 inch normal fin in and the board is my friend again.Believe it or not there is a massive difference from 7 to 8 and so on with fin size.Go the 7

Thanks for the tip Mac .

Chrispy how many fins do you reckon are in that artwork . I reckon I can count about 40 per frame And I think there were 3 frames so about 120 fins .

Exactly! That why you can find 6.5 and 7.5 if you hunt around.

Even FCS do a decent range of LB fins.

When I got my Mct FB I asked what they thought on fins and the guys at McT said stick with the 7"dolphin thats what they recommend from years of experience and who here can argue that.

Hey Tassiedevel go to this website www.wetfins.com.au/ this guy will look after you. He has a great selection of longboard fins and he told me if you type in fins10 in the coupon thingy you will get 10% extra off. He does free postage for over $75 as well. He is great to deal with and post really fast.

PS I get no kickbacks from this but when you get good service you are happy to pass it on nowadays. Spiro

I should clarify that fin works beautifully for that board and the style of surfing which it was intended but I am missing a HP LB

Thanks Boof, yeah love it mate. A shame that snapper from surf cargo damaged it, still smarting about that. Everyone that has tried it love it as well, what can I say it's a McTavish.
