Same as you Kagey - I am crap.....tried a few times but failed miserably. There were a few young cats at Dee Why one summer about 4 yrs ago who used to rip it up down by the Pole on the high tide. It was great to watch.
I think this one is for the really young guys. Lots of skate moves translate well to skim boarding. There was a young guy at Merrimbula last year who skates for kahuna and is a really good skim boarder. I'v tried it I was rubbish, I think I needed a helmet!
We used to make our own skim boards when we were kids. You couldn't really buy them anywhere. Dad bought us a couple of sheets of ply, and made 'em for all the kids!
