There's something about the classic style of a single fin board that attracts me, so the question is on a general purpose board is there anything really to be gained by adding an extra 2 sides on a board 9'6 and longer?

Only need one fin. In a steep take off, it's nice to be able to side slip down the face, too many fins and you nose dive.
Just like the feel of a single fin, even on my 9'4".

Singles do look nice on the right board, even more so when the fin is glassed in.
My take is 100% single on a log type board and side bites on general purpose board.

I like to ride my Whalebone single unless its a bit bumpy then I find the 2 + 1 more comfortable to ride.

Depends on the rails, IMO no point having side bites on a proper log. Round rails, square tails and side fins don't work.

If it has some edge in the then I like them, doesn't mean I'll use them all the time.

The how much volume thread ( I think) has bob clip which explains it really well IMO.

pretty well said SP. the only time I use multi fins on my longboard is on a full hp,which does not really get ridden anymore. I love the single fin feeling, its just so clean and fun....plus it slows me down when I start getting a bit kook like on my shorty

On a board 9'6 and over I'd go a single fin no worries. I had a 10 footer some time back that was a round pin with a hard edge around the tail and a 10 inch pivot or hatchet and it was agreat board. Can't go wrong .

Single for me, had a 9'6 Mct FB, so much more forgiving and playful in small waves and super stable and trustworthy in bigger stuff (that slip you get is a god send at times). They just tend to find there way, side fins good on 9ft performance mal where you are driving in and out of turns and going top to bottom.

Nothing beats a good single fin IMO!

The fin. When I got it I thought the shaper might have put a dolphin style fin on it but he told me this fin works good and it did. I never even moved it the whole timei had the board.

I took the 7"centre and side bites out of my 9'1" Egan and replaced it with 9" single and the thing just flies in comparison. Great for long carvy type top to bottom moves.

It's interesting you say that, when I first took the sides out of my 10'er and changed the centre to a 9" flex it defiantly seemed faster too.

I think I'll just stick to a single then for the build.

New board single
It depends on how you want to ride, your single is going to be faster but is not going to turn as sharp.

I took out the sides bits on my evo 2.

but I didn't make it a single.

I went full on thruster setup and im proud of it.

way faster and looser

bloody single fins are only good on logs

or you can't surf and need to retrain yourself, then they have a purpose

Or you can try and ride a 9 foot board like a short board and make it look ugly

nar, smooth flow school is the go

but seriously I never try to surf a longboard like a shorty. I mean why bother.

for me, even on a cutback, sure I want it to turn but with smoothness and flow and be able to connect.

ive always rated connecting big. my all time fave surfers are mr and tom curren.

and guess what- they weren't riding single fins

Technically... Not true...

MR was early in his career. Before the Reno/ Aipa twins.... Even after he still had singke till thruster got popular....

Someone of the old lightning bolts on his wall in the shop were things of beauty... There was s parish that was boner material

But I'm with you on the thruster, love the feel on the lb when it has enough juice to move them. Otherwise I'll ride a single.

Riding a single is like driving a V8 down the highway.

Riding a 2+1 is like driving a corolla in traffic.
