next week, about 15 or 20 of my homies from the local break are going in a big LB group to New Guinea for about 6 days. I probably wont' find out the exact location until they get back. They've been planning it for a year I reckon.

I don't know much about New Guinea surf, for that matter, I don't know much about surf anywhere outside of my local.

What can they expect?

Not this lot, I think their favorite drug would be Metamucil in most cases.

Hi Obct, I can speak with some recent experience about this!

PNG is a land of contrast. In Moresby it is frightening. Don't go outside the airport or your hotel without being accompanied.

While waiting in the airport and plane, there are aroma's you have never smelt before (and never want to again!).

Once in the coastal villages, the locals are very friendly.

But more importantly, you can expect lots of LB friendly waves. They will have a blast. PS. Let me know if you need an equipment list to pack? Reef Booties and a well stocked First Aid/Medicine chest are top of the list. Plus anything to give to the kids like cloths, crayons, paper etc.

Nice pics Daneli, I reckon that break, on that day, would be perfect for a LB.

I found out where they're going, it's Nusa island surf retreat.

Two mates went there last year, with longboards and are still talking about it!

Stayed at nusa island retreat over Christmas 2011. Was HEAPS of fun!

Swell isn't as consistent as indo. We had 5 days of great swell and 3 quiet days.. (Still surfed 6 hours on the quiet days though)

Is they get nusa lefts on its day or nago rights they'll be stoked! Long longs is also an all time LB wave, big walling left hander that goes for ages and ends in deep water.

Went there a few years back, they should expect...

A great trip ... It's a great place, I went on a last minute plan with dad, it was near the end of the surf season so didn't surf heaps but even the small days are fun, lots of options. Dad has been back a few times since, he is into fishing and has a mate over there now and has been gong back every year and he's taken a few of his mates who surf and they all got waves no worries.

But the waves don't get to big, head high and a bit is about as big as it get, some breaks are shallow and all are obviously over coral, booties aren't a bad idea. There are heaps of breaks and most are very long, good variety of lefts and rights.

Going fishing is a great idea, sailfish, mackrel etc...

And Nusa island is a great place to stay, nice and laid back and with that many people I'd guess they have it booked out or close to.

As daneli said, take the local kids a few gifts, tennis balls are a big winner.

And tell them to relax, getting there is half the fun, air Nui guini are shocking, of the 6 flights we took none left on time and less than half actually went to their proper destination.

Yes PNG can be a place of contrasts.

There's lots of surf, if you are prepared to travel off the beaten track.

Of course its not Indonesia. It has never tried to compare itself to Indo, but there are less tourists and the water is cleaner!

Go easy on Air Niugini! True, a domestic flight leaving on time may be rare, but to say they go to the wrong destination is a bit rich. I f you are travelling by Air Niugini, avoid the school holiday periods!

Stap isi!

On Friday Arvo, I finally got the chance to chat with one of the participants.

Whilst not exactly saying that he hated the trip, he did say he would not be going back to NG any time soon.

I reckon his opinion would have been a lot different if he had struck some good surf every day.

And there's probably only so much you can do in a tiny island when there's no surf.
