Seen this morning, 11:30am (not by me)... I would love to see Orcas in Victorian Waters, with my own eyes!

They say the huge black dorsal fin is easy to identify...

Dorsal fins on males can be 1.5m tall !! That's huge!

Wow that would be something to see!

Especially from the safety of the pier, have there ever been any recorded attacks on humans in the wild, I know they have attacked and killed in captivity but never heard of it in the wild?

Amazing creatures none the less

I've heard that they need 60 feet of water to hunt, and use their sonar, even though they have terrific eyesight, in and out of the water...

But yeah, not sure if there have been attacks in the wild...
When you read up them, they appear to be very specific eaters/hunters...

I'd say you have more chance of getting killed by another surfer, than by a Killer Whale...

I suppose they are smart enough and good enough at getting a feed they dont need to eat a bony human.

I watched that clip on you tube about the KW chowing down on GW in the area, the GW were recorded as being at that place at that time for years, after that attack they were never seen there again!

Thanks obct, I hadn't read that!

^Indo that just appears as a black box, no video on my screen...
Actually, I can no see it is the Seals on Shore hunt...

For clarification, I think they need 60 feet of water to hunt whales, for water based hunts... I'm not sure why... But it is well documented in California... The whales stay close to the coast and appear immune to the Killer Whale hunting... until they are forced to cross particular sections of deep water, and Killer Whales start having a 'crack'. The mum and the new born calves usually escape with a few scars... But sometimes the Killer Whales win.

There are at least 4 sub species of Killer Whales... Researchers are trying to figure out if there aren't more sub species... The 'eye patch' is the main differentiator... Plus some sub species having Grey Backs, behind the dorsal fin...

We know stuff all about Killer Whales... Similar to the Western Lowland Gorilla... 2005 estimated population was 50,000, then in 2008 they found about 125,000 hanging around Lake Tele, deep in the Congo... A little bit off the beaten track... There are also 4 sub species of Gorilla... Eastern Lowland, Eastern Highland (Gorilla's in the mist...), Western Lowland, and the Cross River Highland, which should just be called the Western Highland...

Actually Ted, it was Epic, but not Super Epic... The only miniature negative, the Super Low Tides were over night... In the DARK! We only have 0.85 lows, and 1.5 highs... 9-10am high, 2-3pm high-low... If it was a 0.3 Low at any stage, it would have given a whole heap of hours under the 1.0 mark... The reefs are typically better under a 1.0 or 1.1 tide... doesn't matter too much if it is rising or dropping... But obviously a 0.1 tide, rising through 0.2-0.6 can be pretty epic! But hey, we get CRAP loads of swell, and there are options of all tides!! Happy Days!

I've been to the whaling museum in Eden, it's a must see if you're ever down there. The story of Old Tom is fascinating.

Yeah I get annoyed sometimes when its only 8 out of 10! We have plonkers up my way doing the Swellnet surf report who call a weak 1-2ft offshore day a 5 out of 10. I like the look and sound of your Epic low tide days

Epic weekend though!
Very very fine waves!
It will probably be the 2nd best 3 day swell we get for the year. Very high quality!
