On the finer points of surfing rules can someone please clarify the rules with surfing a break with a crew of locals as far as priority goes?

Thought I knew the rules... but maybe not?

I wasn't aware the rules changed... as far as I am concerned, so long as everyone shows respect and no one 'hogs' the peak, priority is still with the person furtherest inside and out the back that calls the wave.

Personally, when there is clearly a local group, I tend to sit off-side and pick up the missed ones. Over time, once I have chatted to a couple of them, if all goes well, I might go over and sit with them - still showing respect and also acknowledging that it's not my local. More often than not, if you show that you are not a kook, they'll let you paddle into a few... if you kook a couple, they'll probably start dropping in on you.

Depends on how 'heavy' the localism is...

That's the key, instead of eyeing one another off, have a chat works for me.But hey I am such a nice guy
Another important factor is get a good wave and smash it and they will respect you back, but kook it and its game over

Sounds about right, thats what I thought. I will paddle back out near the peak but not necassarily take every set. I like to watch others surf as well so its not all about me catching as many as I can. Good to know i have me bearings correct then, cheers guys.

I honestly dont think there are any rules in the surf other than being respectful, sharing waves and surfing within your limits. The supposed "rules of surfing" are great in principle but you tend to find that most of the people that preach these rules are the worst offenders at not following them.

Dont get me started on surfers thinking they own breaks mac that particular spot and its immediate vicinity is home to some of the goldies most beligerent and ill-mannered longboarders I have ever had the misfortune to share the water with.

AND I may have made a bit of a prikk of myself a few weeks ago at L/M when a guy paddled out to where Tom and I were surfing and declared that he was a local and there were more locals on their way out so we probably wouldnt be getting too many more waves WTF Lets just say that over the next hour we didn't make any new "local" friends and the "locals" didnt get any waves

Bad manners and localism, don't get me started.
Breeding this sort of vibe makes me wonder when these locals travel to other spots, what do they ecpect that they are going to be treated well.
Lighten up people, this is surfing, its fun. If you want aggro take up contact sport and beat the crap out of each other and leave surfing to people who do it for the right reasons.

Hey Souwester
My philosophy is to paddle out sit wide for a while assess the pack say hello smile take a couple of waves, find out where I fit in the line up according to my surfing ability you have a right to surf wherever and whenever you want there will always be better or worse surfers than you, if your standing in the line at the motor registry do you step aside and let the local guy go first, where I surf there is usually one representative from every country on the planet
cheers Boof

Wow that's heavy BB,knowing Tom well, it must have been you coursing all the trouble[}:)]
On a serious note, what would prompt the guy to be such a wanker,I mean wtf who the hell died and made him king. ( Makaha )The only trouble I have ever had there was me being the aggressor and it takes a bit to ark me up to fire away.

Hey rune - how are ya ?

Problem is mate that these wankers that I have referred to don't go anywhere else to surf. They have been surfing the same break all their life and really have it wired which added to their snaking and wave hogging attitude really makes is a chore to get quality waves when they're around. The reason they don't surf anywhere else is because they are afraid of being treated like the way they treat others and they wouldn't have all their asslicking mates around to hoot them and tell them how they rip !!

And you know it aint generally the young bucks either its the over 50 crew usually. I surf at places that have a local shortboard crew on my mal and I rarely get any grief cos they know that if I've got the ticker to surf a mal where they surf shorties then they don't have anything to bitch about. I reckon sometimes they actually enjoy seeing the old man getting a beating in a heavy shorey

So to summarise (my rules) I reckon it's every man for himself in the surf. Be respectful of others/dont put yourself or others in danger and always be aware of what and who is around you (dont surf with your head up your ass)

I'm well thanks Billboard. The weather over here is beautiful, the surf isn't. Dropped my son and a couple of mates off at the local beachie and they had a hoot. Oh to be a teenager again (no thanks)

I feel sorry for these kooks (no matter how well they surf their local). Travel is one of the great joys of surfing, not just for the different surf but also for the mostly cool people you meet. Imagine if we were all like that, not moving from our own little space and too afraid to venture afield. Their loss.
Jeez I rant a bit don't I.
Hoping for a bit of swell for the W/E. What's the forecast for your neck of the woods.
