Love camping...did the week prior to Australia at Broken Head this year...small crowd and surf was just brilliant for 5 of 6 days. (all ready booked for next year)
Off Saturday night for one night with No1 Son... will be north of here on one of the points...yep small surf, but really suits the lazy weekend away..lovin it

I just got me a 89 Caravelle and once I can prove it is trustworthy for a longer trip, PP and Saltwater are on the agenda.

So, I guess 6 hours one way for a weekend surf, to answer your other question.

Why did you just not keep your inlaws one?

Sold mine 3 yrs back after driving it to WA. Presently in the market for a late model van to do a refurb for my tassie trip. It will be my winter project in the shed. This time it will be a late model one with air con and decent fuel efficiency!!!

I do not camp anywhere near as much these days but I still love it. Especially when you camp at spots that do not really have accom options. I will always be a camper at heart - whether its a van or a tent! Our setup is great these days and within 10 mins you are practically done.

Well when we go to PP there is no real excuse for you not to come for a night or two given where you reside !!! One of my mates is bringing his eldest son along for his first camping experience tom night. Should be brilliant fun for them both. A shame there can not be a fire but they are banned at this location. Not like PP

Agree with you on tents. used to have a few different ones, big / small etc. Now days, 1, 2 person hike tent for hiking and climbing only and a 6-8 person. The 6-8 person is a ripper...10 -15minutes to set with a fly. Its basically and over-grown dome tent..bloody brilliant.

Have fun tom.. took my son's mate for his first camping trip (both 12 going on 13) for the week a Broken... he is still talking about it.
Kids and camping keeps it real for them IMHO

Prob about 12 years ago I drove to the Goldy for a week from home (Bulli at the time), back home for a night then at 3am next day back to Cres'n'ed for 2 days then back home - wouldn't dream of that now.

Looking at next weeks forecast Byron or Noosa will deliver but could I be bothered - unfortunately prob not.

I used to love heading for roadies when conditions looked good. Unfortunately work has been very busy the last 18 mths which has restricted these trips. From mid Feb things look better so look out all points north! Although not too far north. Nossa and Goldie are out for me these days as too crowded. I hate crowds. Lots of other good waves between here and there though

Tom - PP is Point Plommer - one of my fav camping spots! Let me know if you are going and I can give you a few tips. Several lads on this forum live very close to there. Also if you are driving north from tassie for yr 18th make sure you stop in and say hello. I will take you for a few waves around here as long as it stays secret

MR - actually one of the reasons we still camp is that many of the places we go to requires a 4wd to access and the van just doesn't cut it!

If I was single, and loaded with coin, I would drive my new Toyota FJ Truck up to PP at the drop of hat!

I'd love to be in on a PP trip... But I can't right now!

Yes, young Tom, PP is indeed that point you know, but the other 'point' is that there's a bit of tradition in surfing about being kinda discreet about actually naming spots in a public forum. That's why you see so many kind of sideways references on here when people are talking about where they have surfed or planned to surf. They are especially cryptic (borderline psychotic) about this in some places, but really it's just a way of kind of respecting the locals and hopefully, perhaps keep the crowds down for them (and for us) and to ensure they don't resent visitors any more than they already might. That's my take on it anyway. Not everyone is as welcoming (desperate for company) as some of you Apple Islanders.

How far will drive one way for a surf? The most i normally go these days is 2 hrs to a long right hand point break. I much prefer 5 mins though

Only just read this, as you say, not everywhere is uncrowded as here. I can understand where you are coming from. Now I see why people on here always talk a bit sideways...

Don't worry Mister Cake you are still but young and will soon learn the ways of the wise.

Lacey - you need to be properly set up for camping and if it rains it doesn't matter a toss. A good tent, ground sheets, a large tarp well set up and you are set for as long as you want. Only way to go.

The biggest advantage is that if you are camped in the right spot you wake up, look out the door to check the surf, have a Dingo's breakfast and hit the surf. No driving, no hassling about somewhere else being better just out there.

Sound like most of you guys know the spots, good waves, good camping and a short drive to get supplies. Nothing beats it. That is of course IMHO.

PP is one of my all time favourite spots, along with that other spot not far up the road, then those other two a bit further north.
