heading down to Dunsborough for the weekend with a couple of mates and we'll be bringing our mini mals.

As we are all new to surfing any input re beginner friendly spots in the area would be appreciated (done some research on the www and it seems that the place to go would be Windmills / Yallingup or?)

No-one wants to give away spots down south. I will say try protected beaches. Look at the wind directions and pick somewhere suitable, protected from wind and swell. Windmills and Yallingup won't be suitable.

would agree with legion yalls might not be suitable if ya not confident, specialy if its not a verry small day

Windmills and Yalls are not really suitable for novices... try the beach break at Smiths beach - (I'm not letting any secrets out here fellas). If it's onshore or big, try somewhere on the other side of the cape - there's a couple of breaks there...

Inside the reef where they have the surf school at Yalls, never seen it before the last time I went down there. Not bad for learning

ohh well - the forecast for that weekebd was 2m swell and abt 25k southerly winds so not the best day to go out at Yalls (even as a beginner) - but we did ;-)

Made it through the break and was sitting just behind where the waves break but did not have the balls to go for it. Was out for abt 45 min and made it safely back to the beach. Was a great experience sitting in the water between (what at least felt like) houses being moved around! Gained a lot of confidence re paddling round the waves etc.

Since that weekend I've had heaps of fun at spots round Perth and is starting regularly to catch waves.. Loving it an looking forward to more swell!

WHY DID IT TAKE ME THIS LONG TO GET INTO SURFING?

I 'll give you a tip if you dont mind

If its BIG as I believe it can around this time of year in the WILD

west, have a think about catching the reforms. Let the experienced guys take off out the back and once the wave has turned into white water turn and paddle like there's no tomorrow and your on,best on a high tide.

For future reference, you can get offshore waves in those conditions. Or also sheltered cross-offshore. Just look around, pay attention to the geography.

I'm surprised it's even been breaking out there lately. Needs a fair amount of swell to work, especially in the middle of the bay where you were. Sharp reef getting in and out. Ouch.

Ha that's the beauty of longboardering Legion we can ride things the shortboarders cant and also ride what they ride,so I think we have everything covered

yeah - was also surprised to see the waves break in the middle of the bay with only (abt) 2m swell. Talked to one of the other guys and we recon that it was because of the northerly winds.

On some of the waves I could even ride them front side towards the most westerly point of the beach.

All in all it was an excellent day. Only me and one other guy out, sunny and plenty of waves. Cause of the wind it was a bit messy but once on the wave that did not matter to much to me
